“Dancing with the Stars” won’t premiere until early fall, but eager fans are already getting a sneak peek of the season.
Hulu, which streams “Dancing with the Stars” after it airs on Disney+ and ABC, announced at their Get Real event on April 22 that Robert Irwin would join this year’s cast of the reality competition show.
Irwin, the 21-year-old son of late zookeeper and conservationist Steve Irwin, is the first celebrity contestant to be announced.
The youngest Irwin child is not the first in his family to compete on the show, walking in the legacy of sister, Bindi Irwin, 26, who took home the Mirrorball Trophy during Season 21 alongside her pro partner, Derek Hough.
“It’s official, I’m heading to Hollywood for ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 34,” Irwin wrote in an Instagram post following the announcement. “This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid watching my sister’s incredible journey on the show back in 2016. I cannot believe it is about to become a reality. So grateful.”
Irwin, now a zookeeper and conservationist himself, celebrated the announcement at the Get Real event by walking out shirtless and greeting “Dancing with the Stars” presenters and stars Julianne and Derek Hough with a large snake wrapped around his chest.
Irwin has become a likely inheritor of his father’s legacy, serving as both a television host and an animal whisperer at the Australian Zoo where Steve Irwin once worked.
In 2006, Steve Irwin died following an injury from a stingray incurred during the filming of an underwater documentary. His death sparked an international outpouring from fans and cemented the family name in Hollywood and beyond.
Robert Irwin, now readying for a whirl around the most-watched ballroom dance floor, also celebrated the announcement with a throwback video on Instagram showing himself as a guest announcer for the show as a pre-teen.
He wrote, “11-year-old me is beside himself right now… I’m so grateful for the life-changing experience ahead.”
