What I Learned from Today’s Puzzle
- TESORI (25A: “Fun Home” composer Jeanine) Fun Home is a musical adapted from Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir of the same name. Jeanine TESORI composed the music for the musical, and Lisa Kron wrote the lyrics. Jeanine TESORI and Lisa Kron won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Original Score for Fun Home. They were the first female team to win that award. I have seen Fun Home, but I couldn’t remember the composer’s name. I’m happy to be reminded of it.

- ZIP DRIVE (17A: Outdated data storage device) A ZIP DRIVE uses ZIP disks to store data. ZIP disks are similar to floppy disks (speaking of outdated technology…) but have a larger storage capacity. This clue has me thinking about all the technology that was celebrated as the “next new thing” that is now outdated.

To stay on theme, I feel like I need to write this paragraph in a hurry! I do enjoy a synonym theme, and this is a fun one, as there are a number of lively synonyms for HUSTLE. Since the HUSTLE synonym doesn’t always appear at the same side of each theme answer, it was a nice choice to alternate between the left and right sides. Congratulations to Jasper Davidoff making a USA Today crossword debut! Thank you, Jasper, for this delightful puzzle.
