Netflix star Penn Badgley on workout, morning routine, perfect NYC day

In USA TODAY’s The Essentials, celebrities share what fuels their lives, whether it’s at home, on set or on the road.

Penn Badgley is waving farewell to Joe Goldberg and closing the chapter on his Netflix leading man.

The “You” and former “Gossip Girl” star, 38, is an open book (pun most definitely intended), although he reads as more of a spiritual text than his onscreen alter ego’s crime thriller.

“We’ll see what else I can do,” says Badgley, who sat down with USA TODAY for a series of exclusive conversations. “I’m not worried about what I’ve done in the past. I would have had more concern about being able to summit the peak of a show like ‘Gossip Girl.’ I’ve heard that most people die on the way down from Everest – anyone can get on a show like ‘Gossip Girl,’ but can you then make it off and go somewhere else? That’s difficult for anybody. I think one of the only ways I could have done it was to play someone like Joe and essentially murder Dan Humphrey.”

Badgley combines past, present and future as he shares the artists on his Spotify playlist, his chill morning routine and his ideal New York day for USA TODAY’s The Essentials.

Penn Bagdley reveals his daily essentials, from music to an ideal day

Penn Badgley on his daily essentials, favorite music, and how he spends a perfect day.

Penn Badgley music favorites include D’Angelo, of course

Badgley has an eclectic mix of favorites on his Spotify playlist.

“I always have to mention D’Angelo. I would love for D’Angelo to get tired in my mind. I would love for me to feel as though, ‘You know what, I’m done, because I’ve done it.’ But literally yesterday I went back to (his 2000 album) ‘Voodoo’ and I was like, ‘No, it’s still the best.’ I don’t know how that’s possible.”

Also on Badgley’s rotation are Radiohead, Joan As Police Woman, London bands Kokoroko and Sault, Luke Temple and his wife, Domino Kirke: “My wife is putting out a record, and it’s gorgeous.” He later adds Kendrick Lamar to the list. “Kendrick manages to do the nearly impossible thing, which is, be authentic, transparent, prolific, Black, hugely successful, all together,” he says.

Penn Badgley’s perfect New York City day

Did you think a homemade roast chicken was on the list of what makes Badgley’s ideal day spent in New York? He’s a multi-faceted man.

“Ideally wake up before the sunrise, have some tea and watch the sunrise,” he says, envisioning “I’m in a penthouse suite hotel room, let’s say.” He would “maybe walk through Central Park” before meeting up again with his family, “and then we have lunch on the park.”

His dream day in the city changes with the seasons, too. “If it’s summer, I’d say we go swimming (to) Rockaway and get in the ocean. If it’s the winter, maybe we go ice skating,” he says.

And for dinner? “Well, the best meals are homecooked meals. So we leave the penthouse suite behind just for the evening, we go home, and maybe roast a chicken. … Then go to sleep by 9:30 p.m., maybe the kids go to bed at 7:30 p.m. … If I could be going into REM sleep by 10 p.m., that is a day right there. Don’t sleep on that.

“You young ones who think ‘this man sounds like he needs to get a life’? No, I’m telling you, I am living. I lived my 20s the way you’re doing it. This is the way you’ve got to be: Early to sleep, early to rise.”

    Travel essentials: Peace, mainly

Badgley’s Joe Goldberg has traveled the world in his pursuit of obsession. But as Badgley himself arrives at the airport, he has a singular thought: “Where are my children? Are they here? The 4-year-old, especially, we don’t want to lose him.”

Once his kids are located, the actor looks to find peace sans cellphone. “If I don’t have to be on my phone at all, it’s not a must have, it’s like a must have not. A plane is the one place where (I ask): Can we just stop?”

He’s not exactly “rawdogging flights,” though. “I like to spend some of the time that way, some of the time just with my thoughts,” but he wants the option to “watch a movie, maybe, maybe not, sleep.”

    What’s on his nightstand?

Joe’s bookstore plays prominently in the final season of “You,” so it’s fitting that Badgley should have a variety of classic texts alongside him.

“Honestly, on my nightstand I have the Quran, which sometimes I’ll meditate on a passage from,” Badgley says. “You know what I just read that I thought, ‘Everybody loves horror so much’? ‘Dracula.’ It’s a good book.”

Likely coming up on more than just Badgley’s nightstand: His new essay collection with his “Podcrushed” cohosts Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari. “Crushmore: Essays on Love, Loss, and Coming-of-Age” (Simon & Schuster, out Oct. 7) will explore “stories of heartbreak, anxiety, and self-discovery,” according to the publisher.

Penn Badgley’s morning routine doesn’t involve Saratoga water, banana peels

Though the actor’s morning might not look influencer chic and be complete with a Saratoga ice water dunk and rubbing banana peels on his face, he does try to keep one thing consistent to start each day.

“I have a comical, total bankruptcy of a morning routine because of children and work,” he says.

“But here’s the one thing I have. If I get this, it’s worth all of the things,” he says. “There’s this particular prayer within the Baháʼí Writings,” says Badgley, who is part of the Baháʼí Faith, “called the long obligatory prayer. It takes about 15 minutes to say. I have it memorized, and I’ve had it memorized for years, because I love it. I timed it: If I say it extremely fast, I can say it in seven minutes. And then meditate like two minutes after, so I’ve gotten it down to a nine-minute routine if I blitz through it.”

But if there’s time, “I can take 15 to 20 minutes if I want to be a little more luxurious. If I can do that on any given day, any morning, it just makes such a difference, because it orients me to remember a bit more clearly the purpose and nature of life – or at least a fulfilling life, an enriching one.”

A killer workout routine and diet

Badgley gets even more active in Season 5 as Joe Goldberg, kidnapping people, physically fighting and running through the forest in the season finale.

“With Joe, there’s an athletic amount of rage and intensity and vitriol usually in any given scene, even if it’s just a scene,” Badgley says.

Badgley says he approaches his diet while filming “like you would for a workout.”

“You want to be fueled, but empty. That’s the ideal state for a scene,” noting the “challenge” is maintaining that “for 12 hours a day. I usually end up going mostly vegetarian by the end of every season.”

For his workout, Badgley sticks to the basics.

“I’ve started doing all body-weight calisthenics, like only pullups, only pushups, only body-weight squats. And I love it. I don’t even do that many. Just do one set to failure every day of each one.”

Director was unsure about ‘Another Simple Favor’ sequel

Director-producer Paul Feig, at the world premiere of “Another Simple Favor,” said he was skeptical about doing a sequel because he wanted to get it right.

“There were a lot of times in the development of this I tried to kill it because I was just like, ‘If we don’t get it right, let’s not do it,’” Feig said. “We actually had a script that was greenlit, and we threw 70% out of it” after learning what people were looking forward to about the movie online.

“I’m not about fan service, but also I don’t want to rug pull an audience,” Feig said.

Lively, meanwhile, said she was “excited” when Paul asked them to return for a sequel, adding Emily is “probably my favorite character I’ve ever been fortunate enough to play.”

First lady Melania Trump’s outfits have long been a source of both outrage and obsession.

The ultra-private first lady’s public wardrobe ranges from more muted looks, that match her reserved personality, to punchy statement pieces that better fit her husband’s Truth Social feed.

Most recently, Trump made headlines and garnered attention for wearing a Mantilla — a veil-like garment typically worn by devout women to Catholic Mass — to Pope Francis’ funeral on April 26.

Seated alongside husband President Donald Trump at the service for the late pontiff, many learned that the first lady is the first practicing Catholic since Jacqueline Kennedy.

Like predecessor Michelle Obama and Kennedy Onassis before her, the first lady has captured the public’s imagination with her exploration of fashion. However, much of what Trump wears is bought off the rack.

As the president’s second term in office passes the 100-day mark, here is a closer look at the first lady’s lookbook.

Inauguration Day: Melania Trump wore viral hat to inauguration

For her daytime Inauguration Day outfit on Jan. 20, Trump opted for a more understated ceremonial look compared to her eye-popping 2017 Jackie Kennedy-inspired powder blue outfit.

She sported a matching dark navy blue coat and skirt with a matching wide-brimmed hat that covered her eyes, matching heels and gloves designed by American designer Adam Lippes.

During inaugural festivities, her eyes were largely covered by the oversized hat which included a large, white stripe.

Trump often wears hats at official events, including a statement white hat during the French president’s visit in 2018.

Inaugural ball: Melania Trump donned dress with zig zag detail

During the nightly inaugural festivities celebrating her husband, Trump wore a white dress with a black zig zag detail designed by her personal stylist Herve Pierre.

“It was such an honor to create the dress for the First Lady Melania Trump tonight.. I can’t thank her enough… it was a wonderful project, a great collaboration… as always,” Pierre wrote on Instagram.

National Prayer Service: Melania Trump turned heads in signature all-black look

The morning after Inauguration Day, the Trumps attended the National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral alongside Vice President JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance.

In her first official outing during her second stint as first lady, Trump wore a simple black outfit with a matching jacket, dress, stilettos and sunglasses.

Melania Trump Take It Down Act ensemble featured monochrome tan suit

On March 3, Trump used her first public comments since her husband’s inauguration to speak out about the publication of non-consensual sexually explicit images, saying the consequences for victims are “heartbreaking” and calling the online atmosphere “toxic.”

“It’s heartbreaking to witness young teens, especially girls, grappling with the overwhelming challenges posed by malicious online content, like deepfakes,” Trump said.

She was joined on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., by lawmakers and victims of digital abuse in support of the Take it Down Act, which was unanimously passed by the Senate in February and the House on April 28.

She wore a tailored, three-piece tan pantsuit with a cropped waist coat, fitted pants and a matching blazer. Underneath the suit, she wore a traditional black tie and a white shirt.

Melania Trump wears Dior ensemble to joint session of Congress

Trump wore a dark gray Dior wool tweed ensemble in March to her husband’s address before a joint session of Congress.

The first lady was seated in the gallery and joined by Elliston Berry of Aledo, Texas, a victim of an AI-generated, sexually explicit “deepfake” image, and Haley Ferguson of Spring Hill, Tennessee, a former foster child who is the recipient of a scholarship instituted during Trump’s first tenure as first lady.

Melania Trump wears trendy butter yellow trench coat

For the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, Trump wore a butter yellow-colored trench coat. Butter yellow is one of the world’s trendiest colors in fashion this year.

The cream-colored, double-breasted jacket comes from Montreal-based brand Mackage. Trump took to X on April 21 to commemorate the day, in which she read a children’s book to younger White House guests.

“Today’s Easter Egg Roll was filled with family, joy, and tradition – a beautiful reminder that when we come together with open hearts, love and harmony truly shine. The White House’s South Lawn came to life and created cherished memories which will last for generations,” she wrote on X.

The death of Pope Francis, 88, a humble reformer who sought to make the Catholic Church more inclusive, marks the end of an era for the Catholic Church, and sets in motion one of the most arcane, storied and secretive events in human history: the election of a new pope.

Pope Francis died Easter Monday at 88 following a lengthy bout of double pneumonia, the Vatican said. Francis was elected as the 266th pope in March 2013, and his death now prompts the centuries-old tradition of choosing his successor on May 7.

The strictly secretive voting process through which a new pope is chosen is known as papal conclave, a term after which the 2024 movie “Conclave,” Robert Harris’ 2016 book-turned-film, is named. While the book and film are set during a fictional meeting of red-cloaked cardinals who have flocked to the Eternal City to cast ballots for who will lead the world’s roughly 1.4 billion Catholics, Harris told Time in an October 2024 interview that inspiration for the book came from the real-life 2005 papal conclave, which ultimately elected Pope Benedict XVI.

USA TODAY movie critic Brian Truitt gave the film, an Oscar contender for best picture, ★★★★ out of four stars, writing “director Edward Berger’s wowing adaptation of the 2016 Robert Harris novel is more electric than you’d ever expect a papal potboiler to be.”

“Berger improves upon his work on the Oscar-winning ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ remake, effortlessly weaving together locked-room mystery, courtroom drama, detective tale and political thriller in one searingly tense and timely narrative,” he adds.

Here’s what to know about “Conclave,” including which streaming platform to watch the film on and cast.

    What is ‘Conclave’ about?

Conclave “follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting the new Pope,” the film’s official synopsis reads.

After the unexpected death of the pope, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running the covert process of choosing a new leader.

As some of the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders gather and are locked together in the Vatican halls, “Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the dead Pope’s wake, secrets which could shake the foundations of the Church,” the synopsis adds.

While it didn’t take home that prize, it won best adapted screenplay The film was also nominated in the best original score, best production design, best costume design and best editing categories, but did not win in them.

Ralph Fiennes was also nominated as best actor for his performance in the film, while Isabella Rossellini was in running for best supporting actress. Neither of them won the trophy.

  • How real is ‘Conclave’? Pope Francis’ death recalls the movie

How real is ‘Conclave’? Pope Francis’ death recalls the movie

    play

The death of Pope Francis marks the end of an era for the Catholic Church, and paves the way for one of the most arcane, storied and secretive events in human history: the election of a new pope.

Francis died Easter Monday at 88, the Vatican announced. First elected in March 2013 as the 266th pope, his death now prompts the centuries-old process of choosing his successor, which will begin May 7.

That event is also known as a conclave, a term that lends its name to a 2016 Robert Harris book-turned-Oscar-winning movie. “Conclave” is set during a fictional meeting of red-cloaked cardinals who have flocked to the Eternal City to cast ballots for who will lead the world’s roughly 1.4 billion Catholics.

The thriller is available to stream on Prime Video or to rent or buy on on-demand platforms such as Apple TV and Fandango.

Many are familiar with the final moments of a conclave, when the white smoke famously rises from a chimney just outside the Sistine Chapel, sending the assembled faithful into a frenzy of cheers, followed by the appearance of the newly elected pontiff on the central balcony at St. Peter’s Basilica.

But given that the Vatican doesn’t really do Hollywood, one wonders how the filmmakers were able to capture the nuanced details − from elaborate clothing to Latinate voting oaths − shown in the movie, which stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow as at-odds cardinals, and Isabella Rossellini as an inquisitive nun.

“We were given a private tour of the Vatican, and they were quite welcoming, actually, quite helpful,” says “Conclave” screenwriter Peter Straughan, speaking to USA TODAY ahead of the film’s release in 2024. “So it was a big research project, really. It’s a fascinating and theatrical world, so you want to get those details right. It’s a very sumptuous thing.”

Vatican officials seemed OK with the shocking premise of the film, Straughan adds, as well as its portrayal of a conclave’s political machinations. “We didn’t want to be toothless in our approach to the church, which has many faults, but we wanted to be respectful of the heart of the Catholic Church,” he says.

Straughan guides USA TODAY through the questions that surface when watching “Conclave.”

Do the 235 Roman Catholic cardinals really get sequestered like juries until they choose a pope?

Yes. As shown in “Conclave,” once a Vatican official faces the assembled cardinals and says the words “extra omnes” (or “everyone out”) the cardinals are allowed to interact only with each other. “There isn’t supposed to be any information coming in from the outside world, or going out, that could sway the election in any way,” Straughan says.

There are, however, some officials who as needed can act as emissaries, even if the cardinals themselves cannot leave until a successful ballot is cast, meaning one cardinal receives two-thirds of the votes and is elected pope. “While some people can go back and forth, I’m not sure they’re used as detectives as they are in our story,” Straughan says.

Do cardinals who gather for a conclave sleep on the premises?

The cardinals stay at the Casa Santa Marta, a fairly simple dormitory on Vatican grounds. They are allowed to mix and mingle in nearby buildings and courtyards, and dine together in a cafeteria setting staffed by nuns.

“Visually you get this strange mix of absolute ancient beauty and tremendous scale, contrasting with this almost business conference center feel,” Straughan says. “You get this major stage feel, with the Sistine Chapel and these men deciding who will represent the world’s Catholics, and then this almost modest backstage feel. Quite the contrast, which makes for a great setting.”

Is the voting process in a papal conclave as formal as shown in ‘Conclave’?

When cardinals assemble to elect a pope, they vote as often as four times a day, especially in the first day or two, to determine which candidates are most likely to garner a majority vote. As shown in “Conclave,” the balloting process is not a raucous affair but solemn and filled with ritual. “Each time each cardinal votes, he must walk up to the bowl where his written vote will be placed and recite an oath (in Latin),” Straughan says.

One by one, the cardinals place their folded ballots atop a round plate and slide it into an oval urn while reciting an oath. As “Conclave” shows, those ballots are sewn together with a needle and thread, and then burned with a chemical to send either black smoke, meaning a stalemate, or white, signifying “habemus papam” − “we have a pope.”

How much of ‘Conclave’ was actually filmed at the Vatican?

None. “You can’t film at the Vatican, ever,” says Straughan. “We had to come up with alternatives.”

Most of those alternatives were in fact in Rome, which is packed with marble-encrusted buildings from centuries past that can double for many of the chambers, staircases and hallways featured in “Conclave.” (One notable exception: The instantly recognizable interiors of the Sistine Chapel were re-created on a soundstage, and Michelangelo’s famous ceiling is a computer-generated replica of the real thing.)

It’s the best time of the year for people who groove to the “Think!” music and love to provide answers in the form of questions.

“Jeopardy! Masters” returns April 30 (ABC, Wednesdays, 9 ET/PT) giving one deserving competitor the chance to walk away with a $500,000 cash prize, a $100,000 charitable donation given in their name, the Trebek Trophy (named for longtime host Alex Trebek) and the ultimate bragging rights.

According to legend-turned-host Ken Jennings, the contestants appear “the right amount of nervous” for the throwdown.

“On a regular ‘Jeopardy!’ taping day, there’s genuine terror,” Jennings says with a laugh. “It’s a stressful thing to go on national TV for the first time, and then in ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ maybe there’s not quite enough terror. Those people are very confident on camera, and that’s what makes ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ so great. ‘Jeopardy! Masters’ is the perfect balance.”

This year’s third competition has expanded from six participants to nine, including last year’s champion Victoria Groce, who told USA TODAY she celebrated her victory with “the single silliest bottle of champagne,” goodies from “the fancy cheese shop” and booking a trip to Portugal.

    How to watch ‘Jeopardy! Masters’

The first of nine hourlong episodes premieres April 30. Each installment consists of two games. The first six games (or three episodes) features all nine contestants, and the three players with the lowest cumulative scores are eliminated. The tournament’s quarterfinals begin in Episode 4 and include six games over three episodes. Four top contestants will advance to the four-game (two-episode) semifinals. And a winner is crowned after the three finalists face off in two games.

    “Jeopardy! Masters” will air on:

    Wednesday, April 30

    Wednesday, May 7

    Wednesday, May 14

    Tuesday, May 20

    Wednesday, May 21

    Tuesday, May 27

Who will be on ‘Jeopardy! Masters?’

The nine slots have been filled by the Top 3 from last year’s “Masters” throwdown, this season’s Tournament of Champions and the Invitational Tournament.

“The only exception is that one of last year’s Masters finalists, James Holzhauer (who placed third), was invited but chose not to compete this year,” Jennings says. “So we found a great sub”: Brad Rutter, who tops the leaderboard for all-time winnings ($4,938,436), will once again vie for a piece of “Jeopardy!” history.

Rutter, whom Jennings jokes is his “‘Jeopardy!’ nemesis,” joins Matt Amodio, Roger Craig and Juveria Zaheer (the best of the “Invitational Tournament”), Groce and Yogesh Raut (2024 “Masters” winner), Neilesh Vinjamuri, Isaac Hirsch and Adriana Harmeyer (“Tournament of Champions”).

Jennings dubs Groce the most intimidating of the nine.

“I don’t see a world where I can play at that level anymore,” he says. “It’s been over 20 years since I was on ‘Jeopardy!’ I’m not in my ‘Jeopardy!’ prime anymore.”

    “Jeopardy! Masters” scoring

Ahead of the finals, participants receive points doled out according to their performance in each matchup. The winner of each game is awarded three points, the runnerup gets one point and the third-place contestant receives none.

During the Finals, scores reflect the amount of points racked up in the current episode. The totals from each Finals game will be added to determine the winner.

Just when you thought she couldn’t go higher, Martha Stewart has unlocked a new level of unrelatability.

The celebrity chef shocked viewers (and Kelly Clarkson) in an April 28 appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” when she revealed she had never ordered a takeout meal.

“Do you want to know a secret?” Stewart, 83, said. “I have never ordered in.”

The revelation came as she and fellow celebrity guest José Andrés were discussing the filming of their new cooking competition show “Yes, Chef!” in Toronto.

Recounting all the amazing cuisine they sampled in the Canadian city, Stewart laughed off a suggestion from Clarkson that they order delivery rather than go out after a long day of filming.

“You’ve never been like, ‘It’s a Taco Bell night’?” Clarkson asked, clearly in disbelief. Andrés, also shocked, shook his head and said: “Oh my God.”

Stewart doubled down, saying her daughter could vouch for her.

“Prove it!” Andrés said to audience laughter, inviting anyone with proof of Stewart ordering in to come forward.

“You’re so pure,” he joked, down on one knee as if to worship her virtue for never giving in to a late-night Grubhub craving.

Clarkson, back in her seat after getting up in shock, jokingly assured Stewart that she had ordered enough delivery for the both of them.

In “Yes, Chef!” Stewart and Andrés are on a mission to find the best chef among a batch of 12 and to help coach them through any obstacles to success that may be in their way.

“Our job is to be judge and mentor,” Stewart, 83, recently told USA TODAY. “As for the issues, well, there’s anger management, there’s also ‘I’m the best and no one else can do anything as well as I do.’ There are those who can’t cooperate with others or can’t delegate. Perhaps all normal issues, but they’re heightened because it’s a competition setting where you’re trying to put out the best food you can for two foodie people like me and José Andrés.”
