Ms. Rachel defends advocacy for Palestinian children amid backlash
Viral online educator Ms. Rachel delivers commencement speech
Ms. Rachel, a popular YouTube educator, delivered an inspiring speech during a commencement ceremony at NYU’s Steinhardt School.
Popular children’s content creator Ms. Rachel says that criticism for her continued advocacy for Palestinian children is unfair and that it “should be controversial to not say anything.”
Ms. Rachel, whose full name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, addressed the backlash she has gotten in recent months for her advocacy during an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan, on his independent publication Zeteo.
“It’s sad that people try to make it controversial when you speak out for children that are facing immeasurable suffering,” Accurso said in the interview, posted May 12. “The idea that caring for a group of children in an emergency situation means you don’t care about other children is false.”
Accurso said that her experience as a mother of two young children influenced her to raise awareness for the traumatic events being experienced by children in Gaza.
Accurso is known online for her YouTube series “Song for Littles,” with a channel amassing just under 15 million subscribers. Her videos focus mainly on teaching children nursery rhymes, and basic concepts like colors, shapes and words.
Accurso’s advocacy work
Accurso has teamed up with Save the Children, a humanitarian nonprofit.
Last year, she posted a video on Instagram detailing the extensive online bullying she received after holding a fundraiser for Save the Children’s emergency fund for kids in conflict zones across the world.
“Palestinian children, Israeli children, children in the U.S. — Muslim, Jewish, Christian children — all children, in every country. Not one is excluded,” she said on Instagram.
In recent months, Accurso used her platform to highlight the stories of various Palestinian children. In one post, she shared the story of a 3-year-old Palestinian child who lost both legs in an airstrike.
“When I saw pictures of Rahaf in Gaza on the hospital floor, I saw the devastating consequences of endless bombing and continuous violations of children’s human rights,” Accurso said.
Accurso has been deeply criticized
Her continued work has seen Accurso being attacked by pro-Israeli groups. Last month, in a post on social media, the advocacy group StopAntisemitism asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate if Accurso was “being funded by a foreign party to push anti-Israel propaganda to skew public opinion.”
The group accused the content creator of being an “amplifier of Hamas propaganda,” saying images that she shared of children in Gaza were manipulated.
During her interview with Hasan, Accurso said that her advocacy does not come from a place of antisemitism but rather a sense of empathy for children around the world.
“I’ve been blessed to get this platform. And kids feel that I care about them all deeply, and that’s why I have the platform. Because they feel it through the screen, because it’s genuine,” Accurso said.

Singer says relationship angered Diddy
Cassie Ventura testimony is key to case against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs
Cassie Ventura Fine has crucial testimony in sex-crimes trial against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
Kid Cudi’s relationship with Sean “Diddy” Combs’ former girlfriend Cassie took center stage during Combs’ ongoing criminal trial.
Casandra “Cassie” Ventura Fine, who serves as one of the government’s key witnesses in Combs’ federal sex-crimes case, testified in Manhattan court on May 14 that her romance with Cudi (real name: Scott Mescudi) angered Combs and sparked a violent outburst.
Cudi was first mentioned in Ventura Fine’s bombshell 2023 civil lawsuit against Combs, with Cassie citing an alleged incident in which Combs threatened to “blow up” the rapper’s vehicle, seemingly in retaliation for his relationship with Ventura Fine.
Ventura Fine, who’d been dating the hip-mogul since she was 19, said in court that she began seeing Cudi in 2011 after their professional relationship turned romantic. She did not disclose the relationship to Combs at the time.
During a “freak off” — a type of party featuring sexual performances that Combs has been accused of orchestrating — Combs discovered Ventura Fine’s relationship with Cudi after going through her phone and seeing emails between Cassie and Combs’ assistant, Capricorn Clark, that detailed plans to bring Ventura Fine’s toiletry bag to Cudi’s house the following day.
Per Ventura Fine’s account, Combs became angry and lunged at Cassie with a wine bottle opener between his fingers, but she said she managed to escape and went to another hotel, where she contacted Cudi using a burner phone.
During a conversation with Combs following the alleged incident, Ventura Fine testified she wanted to “resolve” the conflict, but the rapper was “irate, so angry.” She added that Combs threatened that he was “going to hurt Scott and I,” including releasing explicit “freak off” videos that featured her.
While exiting Combs’ home, Ventura Fine said Combs kicked her in the back, causing her to fall to the floor. She claimed she sustained a “large bruise” as a result of Combs’ violence. Additionally, when she returned to her hotel room, Cassie said she found urine on the floor, knocked over furniture and a toilet full of excrement.
The court was shown large photos of the bruises Ventura Fine had on her lower back and thigh, taken not long after the alleged incident.

Tory Lanez health update after prison stabbing
Rapper Tory Lanez attacked in California prison
Rapper Tory Lanez was stabbed 14 times in prison, leading to his hospitalization, officials confirmed.
Tory Lanez’s father is giving fans a health update just days after the rapper was hospitalized after an alleged attack at a California prison.
Advocates for releasing the 32-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, gathered May 14 to argue they have new evidence they allege will exonerate him. Lanez supporters from Unite The People, the rapper’s nonprofit legal team, gathered in downtown Los Angeles to present their arguments.
Lanez is serving a 10-year prison sentence at the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi after he was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, updated members of the press on his son’s health. He said that on May 13, medical professionals had already removed “the tubes that were draining the fluids from his lungs,” adding that “they took them out because they said he is recovering remarkably.”
“All that is left is healing from the wounds,” Lanez’s father said.
Tory Lanez attacked in prison
Earlier this week, Lanez was allegedly attacked by fellow inmate Santino Casio on May 12 at approximately 7:20 a.m., a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed to USA TODAY.
“Staff immediately responded, activated 911 and began medical aid,” according to the statement. “Peterson was subsequently transported to an outside medical facility for further treatment.”
It is currently unclear what motivated the attack.
The Office of the Inspector General was notified of the incident, and an “investigation has been initiated by CCI’s Investigative Services Unit and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.”
USA TODAY reached out to Lanez’s representatives for comment.
Tory Lanez’s dad has prayed for Megan Thee Stallion
Lanez’s father also had a message for Megan Thee Stallion during May 14’s press conference. “We have prayed for her on many occasions,” he said to those in attendance.
The rapper’s father also thanked the correctional officers his son has “around him” in prison.
“These guys have been nothing but kind to him. The system is one thing, but guess what? These people still have hearts,” Peterson told members from different news outlets.
In December 2022, Lanez’s father made headlines for his lively reaction after his son’s guilty verdict was read in the courtroom.
After the jury left the courtroom, he leapt up and began shouting. “This wicked system stands judged before God almighty!” he shouted, as deputies closed in on him.
He then pointed to the two prosecutors in the case and yelled, “You two are evil, wicked people. You know exactly what you did.”
Tory Lanez’s father says Governor Gavin Newsom should pardon rapper
During the hearing, Lanez’s father also said his famous son asked him to “dispel a few rumors,” including slamming the fact that some fans believe he has a “drinking problem.” The devout Christian also asked California Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider pardoning his son.
“Gov. Newsom, you have the power to bring my son home,” he said, before adding that the potential Democratic presidential contender is a “family man.”
“You also have children. Please take a moment and look at your child and ask yourself, ‘what would you be doing if the evidence was so overwhelming? Would you think that this man should be free because he’s innocent?” the rapper’s dad said. “I hope you do, and I hope you do what you need to do.”
Tory Lanez stabbed 14 times, suffered from collapsed lungs
Hours after reports of Lanez’s hospitalization came out, his official Instagram account released a statement on the attack.
“Tory was stabbed 14 times – including seven wounds to his back, four to his torso, two to the back of his head, and one to the left side of his face. Both of his lungs collapsed, and he was placed on a breathing apparatus,” the statement said.
“He is now breathing on his own. Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through. He also wants to thank everyone for their continued support.”
USA TODAY has reached out to the California Corrections Department for comment.

Law Roach on Zendaya, Anna Sawai Met Gala suits: ‘Both looked great’
Met Gala: Zendaya suits up in all white
Fashion icon Zendaya suits up in all white for the Met Gala 2025 red carpet.
Law Roach has cleared the air about Zendaya and Anna Sawai’s nearly identical custom outfits at the Met Gala, saying both actresses “looked great.”
Roach touched on the red carpet faux pas during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. The longtime stylist to the 28-year-old “Euphoria” star and fashion it girl said there wasn’t “any disappointment” on their end.
At the May 5 event, dubbed fashion’s biggest night, Zendaya stunned with a dapper, tailored Louis Vuitton white suit with a matching brimmed hat. Shortly after, Sawai, who starred in “Shōgun,” stepped out in a similar Dior ensemble while carrying white gloves for a stylish touch.
“Her stylist, Karla Welch, and I are very friendly,” Roach said. “We’ve known each other for years, and Karla and I talked. Zendaya sent Anna flowers because it was her first Met.”
Roach emphasized that both women were paying “homage to two different people,” with Zendaya referencing Diana Ross and Bianca Jagger while Sawai was channeling Yoko Ono.
“It just happened. They both looked great, and they’re both beautiful women,” he continued, adding that he hates how critics put women and stylists against one another.
‘Great minds’
The theme for the 2025 Met Gala was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and the dress code was “Tailored for You.”
Roach was on the carpet speaking to Access Hollywood when he caught a glimpse of Sawai’s outfit: “Oop!” he said. “Who wore it better?”
In another clip from Hello Beautiful, he said, “I am dying because she got on Zendaya’s look. I’m so glad we became early.” His reactions went viral on social media, creating conversation among fashion lovers.
Sawai’s stylist also acknowledged the moment in an Instagram story, saying, “Great minds @luxurylaw.”
Regardless of the mishap, Roach shut down the negativity, adding that they both embodied the highly anticipated theme.
“The Met this year wasn’t about who had the biggest dress or the brightest color,” he added. “It was about representing and honoring tailoring, and I think both of those women did a good job showcasing what the theme was.”

Tom Bergeron is back hosting for ‘Shark Week’
Josh Holloway loved working on new series ‘Duster.’ Here’s why
“Lost” star Josh Holloway reveals why he wanted to reunite with creator J.J. Abrams on new series “Duster.”
Former “Dancing With the Stars” host Tom Bergeron is back to hosting dancing again. But now with sharks.
The Emmy-winning Bergeron, 70, will host “Dancing With Sharks,” Warner Bros. Discovery networks announced May 14 during New York City upfront presentations for advertisers. The “DWS” special will feature prominently in the Discovery Channel’s upcoming annual summer TV shark-a-thon “Shark Week 2025.”
Bergeron’s show will feature “the ultimate underwater thrill…an unprecedented dance competition between expert divers and their shark partners,” according to a company release. Just like “DWTS,” there will be professional choreography. But with “DWS,” that training will come from a “world-class underwater choreographer.”
Tom Bergeron reacts to ‘Dancing With Sharks’ job
Each diver and shark partner will attempt to outperform their competitors with moves including the Hammerhead Hoedown and Tiger Trot. They will have one shot to wow the judges and be crowned the first-ever “Dancing With Sharks” champion.
There was a “DWTS” outcry of pain in 2020 when original host Bergeron was shown the exit from the TV ballroom after 28 seasons. But a sunglass-wearing Bergeron gave a toothy smile on an Instagram video when announcing his return (to the “Jaws” theme). “Yup, it’s happening,” Bergeron wrote. “See you this summer. It will be fintastic.”

Cassie, Diddy at ‘The Perfect Match’ movie premiere: See the 2016 pics
Cassie Ventura, ex-girlfriend of Sean Combs, takes the stand in trial
In day two of the Sean Combs sex crimes trial, Combs’ ex-girlfriend provided emotional testimony from the witness stand.
A 2016 movie premiere took on a central role as Cassie continued to testify against ex-partner Sean “Diddy” Combs in his federal sex-crimes trial.
At the start of her second day of testimony on May 14, Casandra Ventura Fine told jurors about the infamous 2016 incident where Combs assaulted her at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles.
In a text exchange between the two at the time, Ventura Fine told Combs that she had a “premiere on Monday for the biggest thing of my life,” referring to the premiere of her romantic comedy film “The Perfect Match.”
The hotel incident took place on March 5, 2016. Two days later, on March 7, 2016, Ventura Fine and Combs stepped out at the Los Angeles premiere of “The Perfect Match.”

Photos from the time show that Ventura Fine wore a gold and black dress and was joined on the red carpet by Combs.
Ventura Fine and Combs were also photographed attending a “Perfect Match” premiere afterparty that night, where she wore a shorter, green dress. Other guests at the after party included director Bille Woodruff and Queen Latifah, whose company Flavor Unit Entertainment produced the film.
Ventura Fine starred in “The Perfect Match,” which hit theaters in March 2016, alongside Terrence J and Donald Faison. The “Me & U” singer has also appeared in movies like 2008’s “Step Up 2: The Streets” and 2020’s “Spenser Confidential.”
Cassie testimony at Diddy trial alleges abuse before movie ‘Perfect Match’ premiere
On May 14, jurors in Combs’ trial were shown a photo taken in the embattled rapper’s bedroom, where Ventura Fine was wearing her gown for the “Perfect Match” premiere and large sunglasses. She testified that the glasses were “to cover up my eye” following the hotel assault, where she “got hit in the face.”
Prosecutors also showed jurors a red carpet photo where a bruise on Ventura Fine’s shoulder was visible, as well as another photo from the afterparty where a bruise could be seen on her right shin.
On May 12, jurors in the trial were shown video from the 2016 hotel incident. Ventura Fine took the stand on May 13 and began describing the alleged abuse she was subjected to throughout her relationship with Combs, which ended in 2018.

We’re nearly halfway through the year, and the book world is buzzing with new releases. We’ve seen scathing tech tell-alls (see: “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn Williams), new releases from beloved authors like Suzanne Collins and Joan Didion, BookTok favorites return and some books that make us feel a little more hopeful about the world. Not to mention the celebrity memoirs that keep us talking about our favorite stars.
Now it’s time to look ahead at which summer reads to pack in our tote bags and audiobooks to queue up on road trips.
Most anticipated books of summer 2025
From seaside romances to nonfiction survival stories to twisty crime dramas, here are the books USA TODAY is most excited for in summer 2025. Titles are listed in order of anticipated publication date.
‘Atmosphere’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid (June 3)
“Atmosphere” is a love story set against the backdrop of NASA’s space shuttle program in the 1980s. Quietly ambitious Joan Goodwin has been looking up at the stars for as long as she can remember, but her life is firmly rooted on the ground. But when she’s accepted into a selective trainee class, she finds both her dreams, unlikely friends and unexpected passion. “Atmosphere” is a character study brimming with heart, both quietly lyrical and an action-packed nail-biter.
‘A Family Matter’ by Claire Lynch (June 3)
This stunning debut novel is told in two timelines. In 1982, Dawn is a young mother adjusting to her new life when neighbor Hazel upends everything she thought she knew and desired. The buried consequences are revealed decades later by her grown daughter. “A Family Matter” is based on real custody cases in the UK, where, in the 1980s, the majority of lesbian moms lost custody of their children. It’s a fast-paced, quickly consuming read that interrogates what happens when we follow rules designed to oppress rather than protect.
‘The Dry Season’ by Melissa Febos (June 3)
“Girlhood” author Febos chronicles her year of celibacy and romantic abstinence in this memoir. In “The Dry Season,” Febos undergoes a period of transformation and pleasure where she defines life on her own terms outside of romantic pursuits, also weaving through narratives of purposefully solitary women throughout history.
‘Flashlight’ by Susan Choi (June 3)
Choi’s latest follows one family fractured by tragedy. When Louisa is 10 years old, she and her father walk on the beach. When she wakes up, barely alive, she is alone. “Flashlight” weaves the ripple effects of his disappearance as well as the family’s complicated dynamic, shared memories and secrets.
‘The Catch’ by Yrsa Daley-Ward (June 3)
In “The Catch,” twin sisters Clara and Dempsey live severed lives, adopted into different families after their mother’s disappearance. Clara lives with a wealthy couple and has become a glitzy celebrity author. Dempsey was sent to live with a distant city counselor and grew up to work in data entry, confined to her apartment computer. But when Clara sees a woman who looks just like their mother, it’ll send the sisters crashing together to uncover the past.
‘Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil’ by V.E. Schwab (June 10)
From the bestselling author of “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” comes a sweeping lesbian vampire story sure to knock you off your feet. It follows three young women from distinct periods – 1500s Spain, 1800s London and Boston in 2019 – weaving through centuries and each other’s lives with a deep hunger for love, rage, revenge and freedom. “Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil” is a gory, character-driven masterpiece.
‘King of Ashes’ by S. A. Cosby (June 10)
A Southern crime drama to the tune of “The Godfather,” “King of Ashes” follows three siblings in the aftermath of an accident that leaves their father in a coma – except it might not be an accident. Youngest brother Dante is reckless and indebted to dangerous criminals. Eldest son Roman, a finance whiz, is determined to save him. And their sister, Neveah, tries to uncover the mystery of their mother’s disappearance while also holding the family business together.
‘With a Vengeance’ by Riley Sager (June 10)
Sager’s latest thriller is about a woman on a quest for retribution – Anna Matheson has lured the six people responsible for her family’s downfall to a luxury train, where she intends to confront them, get them to confess and deliver them to the authorities when the train stops. But after one of the passengers is murdered, she realizes she isn’t the only one with a revenge plot.
‘Don’t Let Him In’ by Lisa Jewell (June 24)
This thriller follows three women drawn together by one man. There’s Nina Swann, remarried to a seemingly perfect man after her husband’s death. Her daughter, Ash, thinks he’s too good to be true. And then there’s Martha, a florist living in a nearby town, irked by her husband’s frequent, days-long disappearances. As Ash begins to dig into her stepfather’s past, the women collide and realize they should’ve obeyed the warnings they heard long ago: Don’t let him in.
‘These Summer Storms’ by Sarah MacLean (July 8)
Bestselling historical romance author MacLean is going contemporary with “These Summer Storms,” which follows a woman returning to her family’s private island after her father’s shocking death. But instead of leaving quietly like she intends, Alice is swept into a game with her estranged family because of her father’s last wishes, which stipulate the family must spend one week together and complete an assigned task to receive the inheritance.
‘A Marriage at Sea’ by Sophie Elmhirst (July 8)
This is nonfiction that reads like fiction – the best kind. “A Marriage at Sea” seamlessly brings readers alongside Maurice and Maralyn Bailey’s journey to sea, giving an intimate look at the weeks they spent stranded on a tiny life raft after a shipwreck. Elmhirst’s retelling is a triumph, second only to the seemingly impossible feat of Maurice and Maralyn themselves. You won’t be able to put it down.
‘The View from Lake Como’ by Adriana Trigiani (July 8)
In “The View from Lake Como,” a recently divorced woman moves back in with her parents and becomes the family handmaiden. After the family suffers an unexpected, shocking loss, Jess questions those she thought she trusted most and escapes to Italy in search of the truth behind her family history.
‘Love is a War Song’ by Danica Nava (July 22)
If you love hyper-contemporary stories or couldn’t get enough of “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” this summer romance novel is for you. “Love is a War Song” follows disgraced Native American pop star Avery, who is sent to live with her estranged grandmother after she’s canceled for an offensive photoshoot. There, she meets grumpy ranch hand Lucas, who can’t stand what Avery represents. But when the ranch’s future is in jeopardy, they’ll have to put their differences aside to save it.
‘People Like Us’ by Jason Mott (Aug. 5)
From the author of the National Book Award-winning “Hell of a Book,” “People Like Us” follows two Black authors, one of whom is traveling the world after winning a major prize and the other who is giving a speech at a school that’s been through a shooting. As the two authors intersect, they share loss and longing, humor and love and try to find peace in a world of gun violence.
‘Katabasis’ by R.F. Kuang (Aug. 26)
The author of “The Poppy War” and “Yellowface” returns with a dark academia fantasy described as Dante’s “Inferno” meets Susanna Clarke’s “Piranesi.” In “Katabasis,” two graduate students must put their rivalry aside as they make the life-threatening journey to hell to save their professor’s soul.
