Every post-apocalyptic series has its share of cast turnover. But Pedro Pascal singlehandedly changed the face of HBO’s “The Last of Us” with the horrifying Season 1 hospital finale.

Pascal’s enraged protector, Joel, mowed down the rebel Fireflies (including the surgeon in scrubs), who were about to study immune Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) brain for a possible infection cure to save humanity.

Season 2 kicked off April 13 (now streaming on Max) with a revamped crew of returning faces and new characters in the video game adaptation — including a posse seeking revenge for Joel’s violent act of surrogate father love.

Here are the main players joining Joel and Ellie in fortified Jackson, Wyoming, five years after the Firefly destruction:

    Isabela Merced stars as Dina

Who’s Dina? The warrior who patrols the infected has become Ellie’s best friend and joke-cracking action sidekick. The Dina-Ellie relationship goes deeper during a dance in Episode 1. While Ellie is subconsciously furious at her surrogate dad, Dina gamely rewatches the beloved “Curtis and Viper 2” movie with Joel. “He’s like Dina’s fun uncle,” says Merced. “We don’t see that dynamic in the game, but it really informs how we’ll see Dina later on.”

We’ve seen Isabela Merced before: Merced, 23, played Dora in 2019’s live-action movie “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” and Izabella in 2017’s “Transformers: The Last Night.”

Additional superpower: Merced is Hawkgirl in DC’s “Superman” movie, which opens July 11 (the same month as Pascal’s superhero role in Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”) There’s no blockbuster beef. “It’s a win-win. If he wins, we all win. If I win, we all win,” says Merced. “It’s pretty cool that we both get to be superheroes at the same time.”

Young Mazino can fight as Jesse

Who’s Jesse: The patrol leader gives everything to Jackson, and gains respect from the community as patrol leader. Jesse has an on-and-off relationship with Dina (currently off).

We’ve seen Young Mazino before: Mazino, 33, sizzled in his Emmy-nominated, breakout role in Netflix’s rage-filled series “Beef.”

Extra credit: Mazino brings real fight to dystopian Jackson. Born Christopher Young Kim to Korean immigrant parents, Mazino, 33, is a first-degree Taekwondo blackbelt who “dabbles” in martial arts, including Muay Thai. But expect gun skills against the infected. “I won’t give spoilers, but if Jesse is doing Muay Thai, I’m in a really bad situation,” says Mazino.

Kaitlyn Dever rocks rage as Abby

Who’s Abby? Abby Anderson is a pivotal Part 2 video game character who leads a devastated group of Firefly survivors to hunt down Joel for what he did.

We’ve seen Dever before: Dever, 28, starred as socially awkward Amy in 2019’s “Booksmart,” Betsy Mallum in Hulu’s 2021 miniseries “Dopesick” and wellness influencer Belle Gibson in Netflix’s “Apple Cider Vinegar.”

Previous life: Dever was cast as Ellie a decade ago in the original film version of “The Last of Us” that was later scrapped. “As filmmaking goes, it just didn’t end up happening,” says Dever, who believes playing TV’s Abby a decade later is her destiny. “It feels like that was meant to be.”

Crushing the casting controversy: Some fans initially objected to the pivotal casting, saying Abby is noticeably more ripped in the video game. Dever saw the social-media trolling. “Yeah, duh, like right when I opened my phone,” she says. “It was hard to get away from it. But there was no wavering from ‘absolutely yes’ for this part.”

Dever brings channeled rage to Abby. “I changed my body language,” she says. “How she walks and commands a room is actually quite intimidating.”

The Millers are back, with a son, Benjamin

Who are the Millers? Joel’s family since Season 1 has been brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and pregnant sister-in-law Maria Miller (Rutina Wesley). After so much death, the Millers, pillars of the Jackson community, now have a 5-year-old son, Benjamin (Ezra Benedict Agbonkhese).

“Maria keeps saying, ‘He’s our gift,’ ” Wesley says of her onscreen child. “He’s really softened (her) in a way that she forgot she could be and made us closer as a couple.”

“Benji’s our Phoenix,” says Luna. “The child has reignited our purpose.”

  • Why on earth did Katy Perry go to space?

Why on earth did Katy Perry go to space?

The kookiness of this whole ordeal makes perfect sense for Katy Perry who, throughout her career, has made being corny and unserious her whole brand.

    play

Katy Perry just went to space, and the whole thing feels kinda … whatever.

The “E.T.” singer took a short break from this “Woman’s World” April 14 to be among the stars. She was accompanied by former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, prominent civil rights activist and bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, journalist and television personality Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn and Emmy Award-winning journalist Lauren Sánchez, who so happens to be the fiancée of the man behind it all, Jeff Bezos.

The Amazon founder’s space technology company, Blue Origin, took the ladies on a brief morning trip above Earth.

In an Elle magazine interview boasting the impact of the trip – there hasn’t been an all-women space flight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s 1963 solo mission – Perry exclaimed that “space is going to finally be glam.” Whatever that means!

But why in the world should we care about Perry and friends’ space odyssey?

Who is the billionaire space race really for? Can’t be us.

Let’s just call it what it is: This is all spectacle. The media fanfare, the celebrities selected – it’s all meant to act as an intergalactic billboard for Blue Origin.

Space exploration is exciting on its own as it fills our curiosity of the unknown, but this ongoing billionaire space race is annoying at best and nefarious at worst. It seems like our tech overlords’ obsession with space is motivated less by a love of technology and more by the potential of escaping a planet they’ve mined for all it’s worth.

Whether it’s space colonies orbiting the Earth, “Mickey 17”-style, or settlements on foreign planets, the idea of humans making a second home in space seems less far-fetched as Earth becomes increasingly inhospitable.

None of this will happen in our lifetime, especially if you don’t have $150,000 lying around for the deposit.

From Neil Armstrong to Katy Perry, historians of the future will look back on space escapades like Blue Origin as stepping stones to the first human colonies on Mars or the moon.

But as I sat in contemplation, staring up at the stars Perry just saw up close, I kept coming back to my original question: Why did Perry specifically choose to do this? In her Elle interview, she expressed that she was flying for her daughter, Daisy, “to inspire her to never have limits on her dreams and show her that any type of person can reach their dreams.”

As lovely as that sounds, her reasoning comes off a bit tactless. Is it really best to sow inspiration through a private company owned by one of President Donald Trump’s billionaire yes-men?

Why did Katy Perry go to space?

In a now-memed interview with The Associated Press, Perry expressed excitement about “the engineering of it all” and learning “more about STEM,” some pretty ChatGPT-like answers anyone could spit out when asked about space travel on the spot.

She even shared her lifelong love of astrophysics. Does this explain the “E.T.” music video?

Watching that AP interview on TikTok and reading the comments made it all make sense. Which other pop star would do something so needlessly nonsensical?

Perhaps Lady Gaga? She expressed a desire to perform in space a decade ago, even going so far as to announce that she would be the first recording artist to sing in space in 2015 – something that never actually happened. The Lady Gaga of this decade seems much more grounded.

The fact that Perry herself couldn’t even offer up a coherent answer makes even more sense out of this expedition. Maybe there’s an under-the-table check involved? Maybe she’s just bored and needs some publicity to help with low ticket sales for her upcoming tour?

Regardless, the kookiness of this whole ordeal makes perfect sense for Perry, who, throughout her career, has made being corny and unserious her whole brand.

To her loudest critics, her playing space buddies with evil billionaire Jeff Bezos is just another pledge in her allegiance to loserdom. Her most valiant stans may spin it as campy and iconic. As for me and my house, we see it as Katy Perry just being Katy Perry.

Ashanti ‘American Idol’ performance wows judges

    play

The newest season of “American Idol” is well underway with a fresh batch of musical hopefuls vying for a shot at fame.

But the most buzz-worthy performance Sunday night came not from one of those up-and-comers, but from Ashanti, an R&B darling who treated audience members to a medley of her greatest hits.

In a shimmering floor-length gold gown, Ashanti kicked off the performance with a rendition of “The Way That I Love You,” as judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan danced along in their seats.

She then moved into “Foolish,” which brought the judges out of their seats for a two-step.

Underwood, with a tropical flower in her hair to signal the show’s mid-season voyage from California to Hawaii, swayed back and forth and whooped a few times as Ashanti hit the high notes.

A gaggle of hula dancers joined Ashanti during “Foolish,” no doubt part of the Disney Aulani resort extravaganza that serves as the backdrop for a portion of the show. ABC, which broadcasts “American Idol,” is owned by Disney.

Earlier in the night’s show, Jelly Roll, the singing competition’s artist-in-residence and a mentor during last week’s episode was blown away by another performance − a contestant covering his song.

Contestant Jamal Roberts brought Jelly Roll’s “Liar” to the stage in dramatic fashion with a stool kick, an uncompromising attitude and grit to his voice.

“I would feel disrespectful to call this my song in this moment,” Jelly Roll said after Jamal’s performance. “This is now Jamal’s song. I was singing Jamal’s song tonight.”

    Watch Ashanti on ‘American Idol’

Ashanti served as a guest coach during this week’s episode and told host Ryan Seacrest after her performance that she had been particularly impressed with the contestants.

“All of their stories all of their passion and where they come from, the talent is just through the roof,” she said. “And they have a purpose.”

HBO has made its first casting announcement for its upcoming “Harry Potter” live-action series, filling fans in on who will be playing Hogwarts’ most famous – and infamous – faculty.

The identities of the six cast members playing Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Rubeus Hagrid, Professor Quirrell and Argus Filch were announced Monday as the series approaches its first planned filming date.

“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,” said Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer, in a statement. “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”

Some of the newly announced casting was alluded to or leaked in advance, such as Lithgow as Dumbledore and Frost as Hagrid.

While we don’t yet know the rest of the cast, including the titular character and his group of friends, an open casting call was issued in September 2024 for the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. It called for actors who would be between the ages of 9 and 11 in April 2025, indicating that the decision may be made soon, if not already made.

Filming is expected to begin in the summer of 2025. A release date is still forthcoming.

Here’s what we know about the series and cast so far.

Six major cast members for ‘Harry Potter’ HBO series confirmed

    • John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
    • Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall

    • Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
    • Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell

What we know about the upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ HBO series

The “Harry Potter” TV series will be released over the course of 10 years, with each season being an authentic adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original novels. Through a television series format as opposed to the films, the show will be able to “dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” according to Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content.

In a press event unveiling the show, Bloys added, “We truly have the time to tell more in-depth stories in ways the world has never seen before,” noting that the series will “stand alongside” the films while reaching an “entirely new generation” of fans.

The series is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner, along with Mark Mylod, who will executive-produce and direct multiple episodes. The series is also executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

    • Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” tour begins in April and includes U.S. and European dates.

Beyoncé Knowles Carter released a new campaign video for her lastest collection with Levi’s Jeans, and it features none other than “Cowboy Carter” collaborator Willie Jones.

In the video, Jones is seen with Beyoncé as she struts in her denim shorts inside a diner. Jones is featured on “Just For Fun” on Beyoncé’s eighth studio album. In the ad, the diner’s menu makes a nod to Beyoncé’s previous collections with Levi’s, including “Pool Hall” and “Launderette,” with a B’s combo special and more. The “Chapter 3” collection is now live on the Levi’s website.

In an Instagram post about the collection, Beyoncé shows off her curves, giving fans more outfit inspiration for her upcoming “Cowboy Carter” tour. She poses in denim shorts paired with a denim shirt and a white tank. Many fans left comments pointing out just how fierce the diva looked.

As fans know, Beyoncé first announced her collaboration with Levi’s in September. She followed up the announcement by teasing her first drop, “Chapter 1: Launderette,” in a cheekily nostalgic ad. In the video, the “Cowboy Carter” creator strips down as she recreates the brand’s 1985 “Launderette” commercial, which featured model Nick Kamen in his underwear.

She later announced the second chapter of Beyoncé’s and Levi’s “Reimagine” campaign titled “Pool Hall.” In that video, which is a nod to Levi’s 1991 ad of the same name, Yoncé rocks a denim-on-denim look as she faces actor Timothy Olyphant in a high-stakes game of pool. Of course, the clip is set to Beyoncé’s 2024 song featuring Post Malone, “Levii’s Jeans” from her eighth studio album “Cowboy Carter.”

The second drop came on the heel of Beyoncé announcing her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin’ Circuit Tour, and now the tour is fast approaching.

It will kick off April 28 in Los Angeles and include 32 stadium shows across the U.S. and Europe. Since the initial announcement, Beyoncé has added a handful of concerts including final shows in Las Vegas. She’s also set to make history with her scheduled tour dates.

Katy Perry, Gayle King recap Blue Origin space flight

    play

A pop star, a journalist and a television news host all walk into a space capsule. Yes, really.

Blue Origin’s NS-31 touched down Monday morning after bringing Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez to space and back. The stars, part of a six-woman, all-female cadre, rocketed off alongside former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.

The mission marked the first all-female space voyage in more than 60 years.

As celebrity guests like Oprah Winfrey, Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner watched on, the capsule fired off into zero gravity, and the women were all smiles, tearful and in awe of their intergalactic trip when they returned.

Katy Perry ‘connected to love’ after space flight

“I feel super connected to love,” Perry said of her trip to space. “This experience is second to being a mom.”

Holding the daisy she took with her on the mission, Perry remarked that she brought that particular bloom because it’s a common plant and it can grow through any circumstances. It’s also the name of her 4-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, who was present at the launch.

“This is all for the benefit of Earth,” she said. “I wanted to model courage and worthiness and fearlessness,” Perry added, revealing it was a hard decision as a mom to take that risk but that she needed to “surrender” to the universe. And she said “of course,” she would definitely write a song about the experience.

Perry, who sang a bit of “What a Wonderful World” in space, said the experience was much bigger than her music career.

“It’s not about me, it’s not about singing my songs. It’s about a collective energy in there, it’s about us, it’s about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging,” she said, later calling the flight “the highest high.”

The pop star also revealed the set list for her upcoming tour while in space, and said she carried with her 300 bracelets to bring back for children involved with Perry’s Firework Foundation, which helps underserved communities connect with the arts.

Gayle King conquers fears, says Katy Perry sang to the astronauts

“I can’t even believe what I saw,” King said. “I’m so proud of me right now.”

King has been open about a fear of flying, which is in part why best friend Winfrey encouraged her to go.

“The flight instructor said that I am her best success story. Why? Because she’s never had someone go through the course who’s terrified of flying,” King said.

She also described the mission as “such a reminder of how we have to do better, be better.”

“It’s oddly quiet when you get up there, it’s really quiet and peaceful and you look down at the planet and you think ‘That’s where we came from?’” she said. “It’s so nasty and so vitriolic nowadays and I mean if everybody could experience that peace that we had up there and the kindness.”

King described the crew as a “sisterhood” and said Perry’s singing during their descent back to earth made her emotional.

Lauren Sánchez reflects on flight to space, looks ahead to Jeff Bezos wedding

After touching down, Sánchez embraced Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin and her fiancé, and then went to look for her children.

“I’m so proud of this crew,” Sánchez said in a post-flight interview. “The earth looked so quiet. I was just quiet … I don’t think you can describe it. … It was quiet but then also really alive.

“You look at it and you’re like, we’re all in this together. That’s all I could think about. We’re so connected, more connected than you realize,” she added, saying her overwhelming emotion was joy and gratitude.

“I had to come back, I mean we’re getting married,” she joked about her upcoming nuptials. “That would be a bummer for me.” Sanchez is set to wed Bezos in Italy later this year.
