A 2016 movie premiere took on a central role as Cassie continued to testify against ex-partner Sean “Diddy” Combs in his federal sex-crimes trial.

At the start of her second day of testimony on May 14, Casandra Ventura Fine told jurors about the infamous 2016 incident where Combs assaulted her at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles.

In a text exchange between the two at the time, Ventura Fine told Combs that she had a “premiere on Monday for the biggest thing of my life,” referring to the premiere of her romantic comedy film “The Perfect Match.”

The hotel incident took place on March 5, 2016. Two days later, on March 7, 2016, Ventura Fine and Combs stepped out at the Los Angeles premiere of “The Perfect Match.”

Photos from the time show that Ventura Fine wore a gold and black dress and was joined on the red carpet by Combs.

Ventura Fine and Combs were also photographed attending a “Perfect Match” premiere afterparty that night, where she wore a shorter, green dress. Other guests at the after party included director Bille Woodruff and Queen Latifah, whose company Flavor Unit Entertainment produced the film.

Ventura Fine starred in “The Perfect Match,” which hit theaters in March 2016, alongside Terrence J and Donald Faison. The “Me & U” singer has also appeared in movies like 2008’s “Step Up 2: The Streets” and 2020’s “Spenser Confidential.”

Cassie testimony at Diddy trial alleges abuse before movie ‘Perfect Match’ premiere

On May 14, jurors in Combs’ trial were shown a photo taken in the embattled rapper’s bedroom, where Ventura Fine was wearing her gown for the “Perfect Match” premiere and large sunglasses. She testified that the glasses were “to cover up my eye” following the hotel assault, where she “got hit in the face.”

Prosecutors also showed jurors a red carpet photo where a bruise on Ventura Fine’s shoulder was visible, as well as another photo from the afterparty where a bruise could be seen on her right shin.

On May 12, jurors in the trial were shown video from the 2016 hotel incident. Ventura Fine took the stand on May 13 and began describing the alleged abuse she was subjected to throughout her relationship with Combs, which ended in 2018.

Most anticipated books of summer 2025

    play

How’s that 2025 reading goal coming along?

We’re nearly halfway through the year, and the book world is buzzing with new releases. We’ve seen scathing tech tell-alls (see: “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn Williams), new releases from beloved authors like Suzanne Collins and Joan Didion, BookTok favorites return and some books that make us feel a little more hopeful about the world. Not to mention the celebrity memoirs that keep us talking about our favorite stars.

Now it’s time to look ahead at which summer reads to pack in our tote bags and audiobooks to queue up on road trips.

Most anticipated books of summer 2025

From seaside romances to nonfiction survival stories to twisty crime dramas, here are the books USA TODAY is most excited for in summer 2025. Titles are listed in order of anticipated publication date.

‘Atmosphere’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid (June 3)

“Atmosphere” is a love story set against the backdrop of NASA’s space shuttle program in the 1980s. Quietly ambitious Joan Goodwin has been looking up at the stars for as long as she can remember, but her life is firmly rooted on the ground. But when she’s accepted into a selective trainee class, she finds both her dreams, unlikely friends and unexpected passion. “Atmosphere” is a character study brimming with heart, both quietly lyrical and an action-packed nail-biter.

‘A Family Matter’ by Claire Lynch (June 3)

This stunning debut novel is told in two timelines. In 1982, Dawn is a young mother adjusting to her new life when neighbor Hazel upends everything she thought she knew and desired. The buried consequences are revealed decades later by her grown daughter. “A Family Matter” is based on real custody cases in the UK, where, in the 1980s, the majority of lesbian moms lost custody of their children. It’s a fast-paced, quickly consuming read that interrogates what happens when we follow rules designed to oppress rather than protect.

‘The Dry Season’ by Melissa Febos (June 3)

“Girlhood” author Febos chronicles her year of celibacy and romantic abstinence in this memoir. In “The Dry Season,” Febos undergoes a period of transformation and pleasure where she defines life on her own terms outside of romantic pursuits, also weaving through narratives of purposefully solitary women throughout history.

‘Flashlight’ by Susan Choi (June 3)

Choi’s latest follows one family fractured by tragedy. When Louisa is 10 years old, she and her father walk on the beach. When she wakes up, barely alive, she is alone. “Flashlight” weaves the ripple effects of his disappearance as well as the family’s complicated dynamic, shared memories and secrets.

‘The Catch’ by Yrsa Daley-Ward (June 3)

In “The Catch,” twin sisters Clara and Dempsey live severed lives, adopted into different families after their mother’s disappearance. Clara lives with a wealthy couple and has become a glitzy celebrity author. Dempsey was sent to live with a distant city counselor and grew up to work in data entry, confined to her apartment computer. But when Clara sees a woman who looks just like their mother, it’ll send the sisters crashing together to uncover the past.

‘Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil’ by V.E. Schwab (June 10)

From the bestselling author of “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” comes a sweeping lesbian vampire story sure to knock you off your feet. It follows three young women from distinct periods – 1500s Spain, 1800s London and Boston in 2019 – weaving through centuries and each other’s lives with a deep hunger for love, rage, revenge and freedom. “Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil” is a gory, character-driven masterpiece.

‘King of Ashes’ by S. A. Cosby (June 10)

A Southern crime drama to the tune of “The Godfather,” “King of Ashes” follows three siblings in the aftermath of an accident that leaves their father in a coma – except it might not be an accident. Youngest brother Dante is reckless and indebted to dangerous criminals. Eldest son Roman, a finance whiz, is determined to save him. And their sister, Neveah, tries to uncover the mystery of their mother’s disappearance while also holding the family business together.

‘With a Vengeance’ by Riley Sager (June 10)

Sager’s latest thriller is about a woman on a quest for retribution – Anna Matheson has lured the six people responsible for her family’s downfall to a luxury train, where she intends to confront them, get them to confess and deliver them to the authorities when the train stops. But after one of the passengers is murdered, she realizes she isn’t the only one with a revenge plot.

‘Don’t Let Him In’ by Lisa Jewell (June 24)

This thriller follows three women drawn together by one man. There’s Nina Swann, remarried to a seemingly perfect man after her husband’s death. Her daughter, Ash, thinks he’s too good to be true. And then there’s Martha, a florist living in a nearby town, irked by her husband’s frequent, days-long disappearances. As Ash begins to dig into her stepfather’s past, the women collide and realize they should’ve obeyed the warnings they heard long ago: Don’t let him in.

‘These Summer Storms’ by Sarah MacLean (July 8)

Bestselling historical romance author MacLean is going contemporary with “These Summer Storms,” which follows a woman returning to her family’s private island after her father’s shocking death. But instead of leaving quietly like she intends, Alice is swept into a game with her estranged family because of her father’s last wishes, which stipulate the family must spend one week together and complete an assigned task to receive the inheritance.

‘A Marriage at Sea’ by Sophie Elmhirst (July 8)

This is nonfiction that reads like fiction – the best kind. “A Marriage at Sea” seamlessly brings readers alongside Maurice and Maralyn Bailey’s journey to sea, giving an intimate look at the weeks they spent stranded on a tiny life raft after a shipwreck. Elmhirst’s retelling is a triumph, second only to the seemingly impossible feat of Maurice and Maralyn themselves. You won’t be able to put it down.

‘The View from Lake Como’ by Adriana Trigiani (July 8)

In “The View from Lake Como,” a recently divorced woman moves back in with her parents and becomes the family handmaiden. After the family suffers an unexpected, shocking loss, Jess questions those she thought she trusted most and escapes to Italy in search of the truth behind her family history.

‘Love is a War Song’ by Danica Nava (July 22)

If you love hyper-contemporary stories or couldn’t get enough of “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” this summer romance novel is for you. “Love is a War Song” follows disgraced Native American pop star Avery, who is sent to live with her estranged grandmother after she’s canceled for an offensive photoshoot. There, she meets grumpy ranch hand Lucas, who can’t stand what Avery represents. But when the ranch’s future is in jeopardy, they’ll have to put their differences aside to save it.

‘People Like Us’ by Jason Mott (Aug. 5)

From the author of the National Book Award-winning “Hell of a Book,” “People Like Us” follows two Black authors, one of whom is traveling the world after winning a major prize and the other who is giving a speech at a school that’s been through a shooting. As the two authors intersect, they share loss and longing, humor and love and try to find peace in a world of gun violence.

‘Katabasis’ by R.F. Kuang (Aug. 26)

The author of “The Poppy War” and “Yellowface” returns with a dark academia fantasy described as Dante’s “Inferno” meets Susanna Clarke’s “Piranesi.” In “Katabasis,” two graduate students must put their rivalry aside as they make the life-threatening journey to hell to save their professor’s soul.

‘Renovating the Bachelor Mansion’: ‘Bachelor’ meets HGTV

    play

The “Bachelor” mansion is getting the HGTV treatment.

The luxurious backdrop to more than 40 seasons of ABC’s “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” is getting a facelift, courtesy of some of the lovestruck hopefuls who have stayed in its bedazzled halls. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of “Bachelor” producer Warner Bros. Unscripted Television and home renovation network HGTV, announced a new series on May 14: “Renovating the Bachelor Mansion” (working title).

The new unscripted show will see former “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” contestants, who (hopefully) have skills in interior design and home renovation, returning to compete in design challenges on the property in hopes of winning a cash prize. The new series is set for 2026 on HGTV and the newly redubbed HBO Max.

The famed “Bachelor” mansion is located in Aurora Hills, CA, and is a sprawling, Mediterranean-style villa that has previously been rented out on Airbnb for $6000 a night. It has been the setting for catfights, first kisses, group dates, breakups and countless rose ceremonies since the reality dating franchise began in 2002. It might look a little different in future seasons after the former bachelors and bachelorettes get their hands, and sledgehammers, on it.

The new series was announced at WBD’s 2025 upfront presentation in New York, an annual event in which networks and streaming services show off upcoming content to advertisers in the hopes of selling commercial time. Other new series were announced at the event, including toe-tapping Shark Week addition “Dancing With Sharks” (working title) for Discovery Channel, “Guy’s Flavortown Games” on Food Network featuring Guy Fieri and a new “90 Day Fiancé” spinoff on TLC, “90 Day: Hunt For Love.”

Diddy trial reveals voyeurism, Suge Knight incident

    play

Casandra Ventura Fine has returned to the stand in the trial of her ex-boyfriend Sean “Diddy” Combs with new details about the abuse she allegedly faced.

Combs’ sex-crimes trial continued on May 14, kicking off with her second day of testimony. Professionally known as Cassie, the singer has laid bare the most significant incidents during their decadelong relationship, including her participation in alleged drug-fueled sex parties labeled “freak offs,” the physical and emotional abuse she said she faced just a few years into their relationship, and the violence she allegedly witnessed while with Combs.

Here are the biggest moments from her testimony so far.

Cassie recalls Suge Knight incident with Diddy

Ventura Fine told the court that Combs left his house amid one “freak off” in Los Angeles after being tipped off by a bodyguard that former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight was at a diner nearby. Knight is one of Combs’ longtime music industry rivals, with tensions dating back to the 1990s around the deaths of Knight’s labelmate and West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur and Combs’ rap protégé the Notorious B.I.G.

Ventura Fine said she told Combs, “Please don’t do anything stupid” as she screamed and cried in fear.

The testimony came as Ventura Fine was talking about weapons allegedly in Combs’ homes. She said she was handed a gun at the time to hold in her purse, though she did not say Combs gave her the weapon. She added Comb and his security guard “D-Roc” packed guns from his safe and put them on their bodies before they left.

Kerry Morgan and Cassie: Singer testifies that model friend endured abuse

Ventura Fine’s former friend Kerry Morgan was named in court on May 13, after the model was mentioned in her 2023 civil lawsuit involving Combs. In one alleged incident cited in the lawsuit, Combs entered Ventura Fine’s house unannounced and got in an “altercation” with Morgan.

During the alleged incident, Combs threw a hanger at Morgan, later paying a settlement after the fact. Cassie also paid additional funds to Morgan after the incident, but their relationship has been “strained” since.

    Voyeurism meaning

The singer said she was 22, and within the first six months to a year of their relationship, when Combs introduced her to “freak offs.” He described it as voyeurism, where he would hire an escort “so that I could perform for Sean,” the singer told the court May 13. She testified that it was “a fantasy that he had,” and he liked watching her interact with another man, whether it was a stranger, an escort or a dancer.

“I was shocked. I wasn’t expecting that,” she said. “I didn’t want to upset him if I told him I was scared of it.”

Voyeurism is the practice or sexual interest in observing others in intimate moments, including during sexual activity and undressing.

  • Meghan Trainor switches lyrics to ‘All About That Bass’ at concert

Meghan Trainor switches lyrics to ‘All About That Bass’ at concert

Grammy award-winning singer Meghan Trainor is stirring discussion online after remixing lyrics to her self-acceptance hit record, “All About That Bass,” during a recent concert in California.

A clip of her performance in Huntington Beach shows Trainor swapping the lyrics from “Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two,” to “Yeah it’s pretty clear, I got some new boobs.”

Dressed in a bedazzled hot pink two-piece set, the pop star made the lyric change on stage at KIIS-FM’s Wango Tango on May 10.

Released in 2014, “All About That Bass” is hailed as a body empowerment anthem with lyrics like, “‘Cause every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top” and “Yeah, my momma, she told me, ‘Don’t worry about your size.”

The debut song skyrocketed to the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and is certified diamond. The music video has 2.6 billion views on YouTube.

People online have mixed reactions about lyric swap

Trainor’s recent lyric switch-up had some fans in a frenzy in the radio station’s comment section: “Her changing it from ‘I ain’t no size 2’ is so wild,” one user wrote.

Another person added: “She’s NOT all about that bass anymore.”

Other people defended the singer: “Everybody so salty in the comments for what? it’s about support women until women confidently support themselves..then it’s an issue.”

Trainor opened up about her plastic surgery experience

Trainor, 31, opened up earlier this year about her breast augmentation following her journey with weight gain and loss, pregnancies, and C-sections.

“It was tough to look at my body,” she told USA TODAY. “I’m always singing about loving myself, and it got harder and harder with all the scars and stretch marks. And then after losing weight, too, these boobs were just purely empty, just flat and just felt like skin on my body.”

Trainor gushed about her results in an Instagram video, saying, “I couldn’t be happier about my decision.” Fans responded with a mix of support and criticism. Speaking to USA TODAY, she said she wanted to use her voice for others considering the plastic surgery route.

“If someone out there is alone with their decision and struggling if they want to do it,” she says. “I’ll be your best friend and hold your hand and let you know, like, this was the best choice I ever made.”

Salma Hayek sorprende en edición Swimsuit 2025 de Sports Illustrated

    play

  • Streamer reverts to old name

    Streamer reverts to old name

    play

Everything old is new again. What goes around comes around. Time is a flat circle. And Max is now, once again, HBO Max.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of the streaming service known for HBO content, all 10 seasons of “Friends” and winning Jean Smart Emmy awards, announced May 14 that the service is partying like it’s 2023 and reverting from the moniker “Max” back to its original name: HBO Max.

In a presentation to advertisers in New York, the company described the shift, happening this summer, as meeting consumer needs. WBD president and CEO of streaming JB Perrette said, “No consumer today is saying they want more content, but most consumers today say they want better content.” The name change represents the streamer’s newfound goal of curating quality content, presumably akin to HBO shows such as current hit “The Last of Us,” rather than being everything to everyone.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in a news release, “We are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media.”

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, said at the presentation, “My team is well aware of what the HBO brand means to the industry and our consumers.” The company wants to “elevate the name again. … I know you’re all shocked. The good thing is I still have stationery.”

The name reversion is a hard left turn from the company’s stance just two years ago in April 2023, when the name of the service was changed from HBO Max to Max. Fresh off a merger between Warner Bros. (owner of the eponymous movie studio, HBO, HBO Max, TNT and others) and Discovery (owner of cable channels like HGTV, Food Network, TLC and streamer Discovery+), the message of the day was “more is more.”

At the time, CEO Zaslav called combining Discovery+ and HBO Max to make Max “our rendezvous with destiny,” and described it as a place for “every member of the household to go to see whatever they want at any given time.”

Now, “we will continue to focus on what makes us unique – not everything for everyone in a household, but something distinct and great for adults and families,” streaming president Perette says.

The new HBO Max will be somewhat more select, with a news release stating the brand will focus on programming like “HBO, recent box-office movies, docuseries, certain reality series, and Max and local originals” and it will be “de-prioritizing other genres that drive less engagement or acquisition.”

What’s coming soon on HBO and HBO Max

The advertising presentation also previewed upcoming content on HBO and the newly re-dubbed HBO Max. In September, “Task,” starring Mark Ruffalo, is expected on HBO, a crime drama about an FBI agent investigating drug robberies in suburban Philadelphia. Other upcoming series include “The Chair Company” featuring Tim Robinson and “It: Welcome to Derry,” a prequel series to the Stephen King horror films about the origins of villain Pennywise.

The next “Game of Thrones” spinoff, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” will premiere in winter 2026, according to Bloys, who says it will have a “more intimate scope and quirky tone” than current series “House of the Dragon.” It is based on novellas by “Thrones” author George R.R. Martin.

    That’s got to hurt.

Jennifer Lopez, 55, sustained an injury to her face during rehearsals for the upcoming American Music Awards, she revealed May 13.

The “Jenny from the Block” singer, who will host the awards ceremony on CBS, took to her Instagram story to share a photo of herself holding an ice pack up to her eye, along with the caption, “So this happened.” The following photo showed that Lopez appeared to have bruising under her eye and a cut on her nose, and she noted that the injury occurred “during @amas rehearsals.”

Lopez also shared a photo showing her standing next to a plastic surgeon, Dr. Diamond. “Thank you for stitching me up Dr. Diamond,” the singer wrote. “A week later and a whole lotta ice, I’m good as new.”

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Lopez and Dick Clark Productions, producer of the American Music Awards, for more information.

Lopez was announced as host of the American Music Awards in April, and she’s also set to perform on the show. She made her debut at host of the ceremony in 2015.

“Jennifer’s incredible talent and incomparable stage presence make her the ideal host of the show,” Dick Clark Productions CEO Jay Penske previously said. “We know she will bring her one-of-a-kind energy to the official kick off celebration of summer.”

The AMAs will mark a musical return for Lopez, who in 2024 canceled her North American summer tour. An announcement at the time said the “Hustlers” star, who also split from Ben Affleck last year, would be taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends.

“I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down,” Lopez said at the time. “Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again. I love you all so much. Until next time…”

The 2025 American Music Awards will air May 26 on CBS and Paramount+.
