We went to a silent book club. It’s worth the hype

NEW YORK – A Wednesday night at Lofty Pigeon Books in Brooklyn is an introverted reader’s dream with cushioned chairs, ambient music, snacks, books and – for an hour – absolutely no talking.

This is a silent book club.

It’s a book club in name only. In practice, it is anything but the lively, let’s-discuss ethos you’d expect.

In a silent book club, participants don’t have to read the same book. They don’t necessarily have to discuss. It’s an excuse to quietly read alongside other readers. As the official Silent Book Club LLC puts it, “it’s BYOBook,” and it’s catching on at Lofty Pigeon and many businesses around the country.

The trend reflects a growing post-pandemic need to connect in person while also being mindful of social batteries. Data provided to USA TODAY from Eventbrite shows a 223% increase in silent book club events from 2023 to 2024, especially in cities like Chicago, Indianapolis, New York City, Seattle and Atlanta. But there are hundreds of locations all around the world – you can find one near you on the silentbook.club interactive map.

Sometimes billed as “reading parties,” these events are particularly popular with young adults, many of whom have found their reading community online through BookTok. According to another survey from Eventbrite, 95% of young adults want to explore their online interests and communities through in-person events, and 62% say they prefer lightly structured activities.

Silent book clubs remove traditional book club pressure

Brooklyn resident Ariya McGrew has come to nearly every Lofty Pigeon silent book club since it started in June 2024. She describes the community atmosphere using the famous “Cheers” theme song – it’s a place “where everybody knows your name.”

Traditional book clubs were never a good fit for her because they felt too rigid, but silent book clubs have only strengthened her reading habits. The monthly dedicated reading time helps her focus, especially to start off a new book on the right foot.

“I’m an avid reader, but the pandemic lockdown threw my reading for a loop because I was so used to reading on the subway during my commute and I found it hard to focus (at home),” McGrew says.

As an introvert, silent reading time also helps her balance her desire to be around others without spending the whole time talking. Lofty Pigeon’s events have an optional 30 minutes of socializing at the end.

At Dorothy, a lesbian bar in Chicago that has hosted monthly silent readings since October 2022, everyone is “the weirdo in the corner reading their book,” owner Whitney LaMora says.

“Not only are we more introverted than ever, but a lot of new queer people who are coming to our bar are still more introverted than ever. So the ability to come to something where you don’t have the pressure, nobody’s going to put a microphone in your face, it’s not going to be your turn eventually,” LaMora says. “A lot of us do want to gather and do want to be with others, but are still reeling from being ripped out of society (during the pandemic).”

There’s also no stress to read at a certain pace or by a certain date.

“That is a beautiful thing if it works,” LaMora says. “I’ve never been a part of a book club that has lasted more than six months ever in my almost 39 years and to have a silent book club that is thriving almost a year and a half later is pretty awesome.”

Readers are hungry for low-cost, accessible third spaces

Silent book clubs and the bars and bookstores they inhabit are examples of “third spaces,” or important community gathering spots that aren’t home or work.

Briana Parker, one of the co-owners of Lofty Pigeon Books, started hosting silent book clubs at the request of her customers. She was skeptical because she enjoys reading alone at home, but then she participated alongside her patrons and found herself relishing in the “wonderful celebration of reading” that made her feel like she was a part of something bigger.

LaMora has seen similar excitement with her customers at Dorothy: “Our first few months, the response was so large that before we would open the doors, there would be a line of people, all with their books.”

The events are usually free, but it’s still a business and community-building opportunity for those who host. Lofty Pigeon encourages participants to shop local with a 10% off discount on silent book club nights. Dorothy partners with local bookstores, collects donations for the nonprofit Chicago Books for Women in Prison and has the Chicago Public Library come in to register library cards.

Above all, it offers readers a chance to slow down.

“People have a lot of demands on their time and energy. This is an hour that’s just for them to set aside and read,” Parker says. “We’re constantly hearing from our customers they just don’t have as much time to read as they would like. So this is a way of scheduling it in and giving that gift to yourself.”

Crossword Blog & Answers for April 19, 2025 by Sally Hoelscher

There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today’s puzzle before reading further! Wanna Put My Tender Heart in a Blender

What I Learned from Today’s Puzzle

    • OCHO (9A: ESPN8 The ___) Not being into sports, I don’t watch much ESPN, and ESPN8 The OCHO – a programming block on ESPN – is new to me. In learning about it, I discovered it has an interesting origin story. In the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, ESPN8 The OCHO was a fictional channel that showcased obscure competitions that are “almost a sport.” (The OCHO was a nod to ESPN2 being referred to as The Deuce.) In 2017, ESPN paid tribute to its portrayal in Dodgeball and aired a day-long ESPN8 The OCHO marathon on ESPNU. That event was a success, and has led to ESPN8 The OCHO being a recurring ESPN feature. Events aired during ESPN8 The OCHO include dog surfing, speed chess, chess boxing, dodgeball (of course!), jump rope, speed cubing, juggling, cornhole, and many others.
    • CHAOS (3D: Word before “agent” or “magic”) I am familiar with the term CHAOS agent, which refers to a person who introduces disorder and instability. However, the term CHAOS magic is new to me. CHAOS magic is a belief system that arose in the 1970s in England. A concept in CHAOS magic is that one’s mind has the power to change reality. CHAOS magic is utilized in the worlds of DC Comics and Marvel Comics. I was grateful that the clue here provided two examples, allowing me to figure out the answers, even though I was only familiar with one of them.
    • GOTTA RUN (8D: “I’m outie”) Today I learned that the phrase “I’m outie” can be used to mean “GOTTA RUN.”

    Random Thoughts & Interesting Things

    • PHIL (16A: “Modern Family” dad) Modern Family is a mockumentary TV series that follows the lives of three families. It originally aired for 11 seasons from 2009-2020. PHIL Dunphy, played by Ty Burrell, is the dad of one of the families. Ty Burrell won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of PHIL.
    • EURO (28A: Irish currency) Like Italy, which we saw referenced in a clue for EURO three days ago, Ireland is one of the 20 member countries of the European Union that uses the EURO as its currency.
    • ORA (34A: “Descendants: The Rise of Red” star Rita) Descendants: The Rise of Red is a 2024 Disney+ movie. It is the fourth film in the Descendants franchise. Rita ORA portrays the Queen of Hearts, the mother of the title character Red, the Princess of Wonderland (who is portrayed by Kylie Cantrall).
    • TIO (39A: Madre’s hermano) Your madre’s hermano (mother’s brother) is your TIO (uncle).
    • INEZ (42A: “You heard the rumors from ___, you can’t believe a word she says”) You heard the rumors from INEZ, you can’t believe a word she says,” is a line from Taylor Swift’s 2020 song, “betty.” In addition to the titular Betty and INEZ, the other person named in the song is James. Fun fact: Taylor Swift named the characters in this song after Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s daughters.
    • HAKA (60A: Maori dance) The Māori are indigenous people of New Zealand. The HAKA is a ceremonial dance that is usually performed in a group and involves chanting, stamping, hand movements, and facial gestures.
    • MOORE (6D: “Tangled” star Mandy) Tangled is a 2010 animated Disney movie loosely based on the fairy tale “Rapunzel.” Mandy MOORE voices Rapunzel.
    • HOLY (19D: “What if the way you hold me is actually what’s ___?”) Here’s a second Taylor Swift reference. “What if the way you hold me is actually what’s HOLY” is a lyric from Taylor Swift’s song, “Guilty as Sin,” off of the 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department.
    • TOLEDO (24A: City in Spain or Ohio) TOLEDO, Spain is located in the central part of the country. TOLEDO, Ohio is located in the northern part of the state, on the western end of Lake Erie. TOLEDO, Spain and TOLEDO, Ohio are sister cities.
    • SKA (27D: Reel Big Fish genre) SKA is a music genre that originated in Jamaica. It combines elements of mento, calypso, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Reel Big Fish formed as a SKA band in 1991. Their most recent album, released in 2018, is titled Life Sucks…Let’s Dance.
    • ROCK STAR (36D: Joan Jett or Debbie Harry) Joan Jett founded Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in 1979. They were inducted into the ROCK and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Debbie Harry is the lead singer of the band Blondie, which was inducted into the ROCK and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. I appreciate the choice to highlight two female ROCK STARs in this clue.
    • DEKES (51D: Hockey fake-outs) In hockey, DEKES are feints that draw opposing players out of position. The term is derived from a shortening of the word “decoy.” I learned the word DEKE from a crossword nearly five years ago. It has shown up occasionally since then, and I am always thrilled to be able to fill it in right away.
    • THAI (56D: Cuisine with phanaeng) Phanaeng is a type of red THAI curry paste.
    • SHE (57D: “___ Used To Be Mine”) “SHE Used to Be Mine” is a song Sara Bareilles wrote for the musical Waitress (which was adapted from the 2007 movie of the same name).
    • EAR (58D: Unit of corn) EAR is making back-to-back puzzle appearances. We saw it yesterday clued as [Common piercing spot].
    • A few other clues I especially enjoyed:
      • NEITHER (55A: “Is there a secret third option?”)
      • PATHS (1D: “I’m so glad our ___ crossed”)
      • SHOE RACKS (31D: Places for mules, but not horses?)

    Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis

    • THANKS FOR THE ADD (17A: Message of appreciation after an accepted connection request)
    • THAT REMINDS ME (35A: “While we’re on the subject…”)
    • SECRET HANDSHAKE (57A: Insiders-only greeting that may involve a hip bump)

WANNA PUT MY TENDER HEART IN A BLENDER: Each theme answer contains an anagram of the word HEART: THANKS FOR THE ADD, THAT REMINDS ME, and SECRET HANDSHAKE.

“WANNA PUT MY TENDER HEART IN A BLENDER” is a lyric from the Eve 6 song, “Inside Out.” The song was Eve 6’s debut single, released in 1998. Today it’s the title and theme of this puzzle. The phrase “IN A BLENDER” is serving as an anagram indicator. The following anagrams of HEART are found in the theme answers: RTHEA, HATRE, and RETHA. Thank you, Amie, for this excellent puzzle.

  • Jailed Harvey Weinstein to stay in a hospital during retrial

Jailed Harvey Weinstein to stay in a hospital during retrial

    play

Harvey Weinstein has won a court ruling in his favor after transferring in and out of the hospital several times while serving his jail sentence.

A New York judge on April 17 ruled the disgraced Hollywood producer, 73, can be transferred from Rikers Island to Bellevue Hospital’s prison ward in Manhattan as his retrial moves forward in criminal court. In a statement to USA TODAY on Friday, Weinstein’s lawyer Imran H. Ansari addressed the news.

“Harvey Weinstein is pleased with the Court’s Order directing the City to transfer him from Rikers Island to Bellevue Hospital so he can receive the medical treatment he needs as he begins his trial. It is without question that Rikers Island is the prime example of a deficient and dangerous prison,” Ansari said in the statement.

His lawyers added: “Mr. Weinstein has suffered tremendously within its walls and no human in his medical condition, no matter what they are accused of, should be treated so inhumanely and without any regard to the protections of our Constitution.”

USA TODAY has reached out to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The Miramax cofounder has experienced a spate of health issues in recent years. A November filing from one of Weinstein’s lawyers listed medical problems such as chronic myeloid leukemia (bone marrow cancer), diabetes, coronary artery disease, obstructive sleep apnea, thyroid issues, obesity, high blood pressure and chronic back pain. The lawyer, Imran H. Ansari, accused Rikers Island Correctional Facility of having “failed to render proper medical treatment.”

Last July, Weinstein was transferred to Bellevue Hospital for “myriad” health conditions and tested positive for COVID-19. He also contracted double pneumonia while he was hospitalized. In September, he was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency heart surgery.

Weinstein has been transported to New York City’s Bellevue Hospital several times since he was sentenced to 23 years in prison following his conviction on rape charges in February 2020. The New York Court of Appeals judges threw out the conviction last year after determining the judge overseeing the trial had allowed “irrelevant” testimony from women whose allegations were not part of the case.

Harvey Weinstein’s hospital transfer happens amid his rape, sex crime retrial

Weinstein’s retrial is now underway with jury selection. He has pleaded not guilty to the three charges, which include criminal sex act in the first degree and third-degree rape.

At the center of the retrial are three women, with two alleging that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on them in 2006 and another who claims he raped her in 2013.

Since the #MeToo movement snowballed in 2017 with sexual assault allegations against the “Shakespeare in Love” producer, Weinstein has repeatedly denied all claims that he engaged in nonconsensual sex acts.

In August 2024, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul determined Weinstein could remain in New York until the end of his case, at which point he would be transferred back to California to serve a 16-year prison sentence stemming from his 2022 conviction in Los Angeles.

‘Wheel of Fortune’ host Ryan Seacrest has plank-off against contestant

    play

A new military mom who competed on Wheel of Fortune had herself a big night, but winning wasn’t enough. She challenged host Ryan Seacrest to a plank-off.

Becky Lenski, a fitness instructor from Yorkville, Illinois, took home $73,000 and a trip to Costa Rica on the April 16 episode of the game show. During the show, Lenski said that she had two sons, a recent Army enlistee named Van and a freshman at Ole Miss named Max.

Lenski’s night did not end with her big win, as she challenged Seacrest to a planking competition that left the Wheel of Fortune host in a complicated situation.

    A plank-off

In a video posted on Instagram by the official Wheel of Fortune account, Seacrest and Lenski are seen during their plank-off.

“Becky, our fitness instructor contestant tonight, has challenged me to a plank-off,” Seacrest said.

But before starting the duel, a slightly scared Seacrest asked Lenski if the planks were going to be done with their shoes.

    “Sure,” she said.

    “Oh, man. Alright,” Seacrest responded.

Co-host Vanna White stood next to Lenski and Seacrest, timing their planks.

As both were holding their planks, Lenski said that she had been a fitness instructor for 15 years, continuously reminding Seacrest to watch his form as if he were one of her students. As both changed to a sideways plank, Seacrest began to slip a little, almost falling to the ground.

    “Watch your hips!” she said.

Plank-off ends in a draw and a burp

As two minutes passed, Lenski and Seacrest agreed to call the plank-off a draw, eventually ending the duel after two minutes and 12 seconds. After Seacrest got up from the floor, he is seen silently burping.

“Well, it caused me to burp. I’ll let you know that,” he said.

Since the show, Lenski posted on Instagram that she “grew up watching with my parents, and continued that tradition with my boys.”

“The only thing that would’ve made this day better was if my parents could be there, but I know they’ll be watching up in heaven!” she wrote. “Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

After the show, Seacrest shared photos on Instagram of both him and Lenski planking, saying: “Becky brought her A-game to the puzzle board and the plank mat. I brought a questionable core and the wrong shoes #wheeloffortune.”

  • Only 8 US theaters are showing ‘Sinners’ in IMAX 70mm. Here’s where.

Only 8 US theaters are showing ‘Sinners’ in IMAX 70mm. Here’s where.

Only a select number of movie theaters have the capacity to display Ryan Coogler’s newest film “Sinners” as the director intended.

The period action horror film starring Michael B. Jordan was shot with IMAX film cameras, touted as the highest-resolution cameras available, to create a unique movie-going experience.

“I’m really excited to announce that ‘Sinners’ was captured on film as a format that I fell in love with when I was in film school,” Coogler said in an April 8 YouTube video with Kodak.

Coogler hadn’t considered using large format IMAX film for “Sinners” − a film about twin brothers dealing with a vampire infestation in a small Mississippi town − until a Warner Bros. executive brought it up with him, the Associated Press reported.

“In this day and age with folks having so much access to streaming and watching so many things on their phones, it’s nice to have a format like IMAX that can be an experience you can only experience in the theaters,” Coogler said in an interview with the AP.

Eight U.S. theaters will show “Sinners” in IMAX 70mm and another seven will show “Sinners” IMAX with laser locations featuring 1.43 sequences, IMAX shared.

What’s so special about 70mm film?

Films in 70mm have greater detail, color and depth than most other modern movies, the U.K. Science and Media Museum wrote during the release of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which was also displayed in 70 mm screenings.

“70mm is a must-see experience for film fans,” the museum wrote at the time. “It’s the quality that digital has been working towards.”

New ‘Emily in Paris’ season to go on without one actor: See who

    play

Editor’s note: This post contains spoilers from previous “Emily in Paris” seasons.

The new season of “Emily in Paris” might go on without one of its beloved cast members.

Camille Razat, who plays Emily’s frenemy, Camille, does not appear to be returning for Season 5 of the hit Netflix show, according to an April 17 cast announcement.

The series, released in October 2020, follows the life of Emily Cooper as she navigates life, love, work and everything in between after landing her dream marketing job in Paris, France.

Last time viewers saw Emily, she was in Rome visiting the birthplace of her new beau, Marcello Franceschini, who is an Italian fashion scion with big ambitions for his tight-nit family’s cashmere empire. Meanwhile, Emily’s on-again, off-again suitor Gabriel is doing everything he can to earn a Michelin star for his restaurant.

A massive career opportunity arises for Emily at the end of Season 4, leading her to decide on her future, one that involves leaving a certain love interest behind.

“We’re thrilled with the incredible response to this season of ‘Emily in Paris’ and excited to return for a fifth to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!” show creator Darren Star told Tudum. “Emily in Paris” is scheduled to start filming its fifth season in Rome in May and will premiere later this year.

USA TODAY reached out to Netflix on April 18 about Razat’s future on “Emily in Paris.”

Here is what we know so far.

Season 5 to explore new relationship, show creator says

While some may still be rooting for Emily to patch things up with Gabriel, the focus of this upcoming season will be Emily’s relationship with Marcello, Star told Tudum. Collins can’t help but be excited for her character’s upcoming storyline.

“Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance,” Collins recently told “Good Morning America.” “We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time.”

Star agrees, telling Tudum the pair has a “real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection.”

Collins doesn’t seem completely opposed to her character, one day, finding her happily ever after with Gabriel. But right now, she said he has to “deal with the repercussions of his choice.”

‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 cast

Everyone, except Camille, is returning for the new season.

    • Lily Collins as Emily Cooper
    • Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie Grateau

Why is Diddy on trial? Sean Combs downfall explained

    play

Sean “Diddy” Combs once stood tall as one of music’s most powerful figures. After a stunning downfall, he will stand trial in May.

The billionaire Bad Boy Records founder’s trial officially begins May 5 in New York City as he faces a slate of federal sex-crimes charges, a judge ruled April 18.

Combs, 55, was arrested in September at a Manhattan hotel and was subsequently charged with racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to all five counts.

The criminal trial emerges as a series of civil lawsuits from dozens of accusers have been aimed at Combs, accusing one of the music industry’s most recognizable figures of a pervasive pattern of sexually and physically abusive behavior. The allegations span decades and include accusations of rape, sexual assault and physical violence.

Diddy on Trial newsletter: Step inside the courtroom with USA TODAY as Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs faces sex crimes and trafficking charges. Subscribe to the newsletter.

    What charges is Diddy facing?

Diddy is charged with two counts of sex trafficking, two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and one count of racketeering.

Racketeering is the participation in an illegal scheme under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Statute, or RICO, as a way for the U.S. government to prosecute organizations contributing to criminal activity.

Using RICO law, which is typically aimed at targeting multi-person criminal organizations, prosecutors allege that Combs coerced victims, some of whom they say were sex workers, through intimidation and narcotics to participate in “freak offs” – sometimes dayslong sex performances that federal prosecutors claim they have video of.

In March, prosecutors submitted a second superseding indictment (updating the amended indictment from January that added three unnamed women who were allegedly victims of his so-called sex trafficking enterprise), which claims Combs subjected employees to forced labor under inhumane circumstances. In a third superseding indictment, prosecutors added two additional counts – one count of sex trafficking and one count of transportation to engage in prostitution of “Victim-2” – to the previous three charges against him.

    When does Diddy’s trial start?

U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ruled against Combs’ defense team’s request to push back the start of his federal trial two months.

Combs’ trial, which will take place in downtown Manhattan, is currently set to begin with jury selection on the first Monday in May. The trial’s start date is the same day as the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, just miles away from the courthouse.

Combs, a Met Gala mainstay, regularly attended the exclusive annual gala, benefitting the museum’s Costume Institute. His infamous appearance at the 2015 fête with ex-girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura Fine, captured in a Vogue interview video clip with the late Vogue creative director André Leon Talley, is notorious among Diddy trial onlookers.

Ventura Fine could testify at Combs’ trial and kicked off his public legal struggles with a sex trafficking, rape and physical abuse civil lawsuit filed against the hip hop mogul in November 2023 and quickly settled the next day.

CNN exclusively reported last year about a hotel surveillance video, reportedly from March 5, 2016, with clips from multiple camera angles of the rapper beating Cassie. Combs issued a video apology after the footage was released.

    Is Diddy still in jail?

Despite repeated attempts at bail, Combs was ordered to remain in custody at the Special Housing Unit in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center ahead of trial — a ruling his legal team has challenged in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. He’s been jailed since his arrest on Sept. 16.

The facility is the same facility that holds alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter Luigi Mangione and disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who praised Diddy in a recent interview with conservative podcaster Tucker Carlson.

“I’ve only seen one piece of him, which is Diddy in prison, and he’s been kind to people in the unit; he’s been kind to me,” Bankman-Fried said. “It’s also, it’s a position no one wants to be in.”

Diddy was subdued during April 18 pre-trial hearing

As he faces decades in prison, Diddy’s lawyers were denied a chance to push back his May trial during a pre-trial hearing on April 18.

At a roughly two-hour hearing, Combs was seen smiling and waving to a few people as he exited the courtroom, including his mother Janice Combs, following the hearing, more emotionally subdued than a previous one in March.

Throughout the April 18 court hearing, Combs looked around the room multiple times. In some moments, he nodded along with his defense team, and at other times passed notes to his attorneys.

Combs’ attorneys made the original request in a motion filed April 16 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY.

‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling faces backlash to anti-trans comments

    play

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling is once again sparking controversy after her social media posts and actions in support of a recent U.K. Supreme Court ruling against trans women.

The U.K.’s highest court ruled April 16 that the definition of a woman under equality legislation referred to “biological sex” and that trans women with gender recognition certificates are not protected from discrimination as a woman under Britain’s Equality Act.

In several posts on X, Rowling celebrated “terfs” and referred to the ruling as “TERF VE Day,” a play on V-E Day, the formal end of World War II and Nazi occupation in Europe. Since 2019, Rowling has been labeled a “terf,” or trans-exclusionary radical feminist, for her anti-trans views that conflate sex with gender and suggest that changing one’s biological sex threatens her own gender identity.

“I love it when a plan comes together,” Rowling posted to X alongside “#SupremeCourt” and “#WomensRights” while beachside with a drink and a cigar. Rowling reportedly donated £70,000 (about $93,000) to For Women Scotland, the campaign group that argued the case, according to U.K. news outlet The Times.

While the court said trans people would not be disadvantaged by the decision, critics worry it could lead to discrimination, especially regarding employment issues.

‘Bridgerton’ star Nicola Coughlan slams JK Rowling

Stars in the “Harry Potter” film universe like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Eddie Redmayne and David Tennant have denounced the author’s anti-trans views. Radcliffe told The Atlantic last year that the comments made him “really sad” and that he hasn’t had contact with her since her 2020 posts.

“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are,” Watson tweeted in 2020.

“Bridgerton” actor Nicola Coughlan is the latest celebrity to speak out against Rowling, sharing an article from The Cut with the headline “This Is a New Low for J.K. Rowling.”

“Keep your new Harry Potter lads,” Coughlan wrote in an Instagram story April 18. “Wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole.”

Coughlin also posted a video to her Instagram with her thoughts on the Supreme Court ruling, saying she was “completely horrified” and would match donations to trans charity Not a Phase.

“To see an already marginalized community being further attacked and attacked in law is really stomach-churning and disgusting. And to see people celebrating it is more stomach-churning and disgusting,” Coughlin said.

Rowling also faced backlash April 6 after her disparaging comments about other members of the LGBTQ+ community on International Asexuality Day, calling it “International Fake Oppression Day.”

Asexuality is under the LGBTQ+ umbrella and is a sexual orientation defined as not experiencing sexual attraction. Just under 1% of U.S. adults identify as asexual, pansexual or queer, according to a 2025 Gallup poll.

And during the 2024 Olympics, Rowling repeated a false narrative that Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif was transgender, even though she is a cisgender woman. Rowling’s high-profile comments, as well as those from now-Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump, had Khelif publicly “transvestigated,” which refers to an unfounded conspiracy theory that tries to prove that notable people, especially athletes, are secretly trans. “Transvestigating” athletes like Khelif heightens risk of disqualification and threatens safety, experts have previously said.

Is J.K. Rowling involved in the new ‘Harry Potter’ show?

Rowling serves as an executive producer on the series and was “very involved in the process of selecting the writer and the director,” Variety and Entertainment Weekly reported in November. HBO has defended Rowling’s involvement with the show amid backlash.

The new TV adaptation of Rowling’s landmark fantasy novels is currently casting child actors to play Harry, Ron and Hermione. Much of the adult cast is set, including John Lithgow as the new Albus Dumbledore.

  • Rob Lowe scolds tour guide over John Stamos confusion

Rob Lowe scolds tour guide over John Stamos confusion

    play

Rob Lowe is giving a Hollywood bus tour guide a less than stellar job review.

The “West Wing” alum took to Instagram and posted a video April 15 of a tour guide announcing, “This is John Stamos” as he passed by. In the clip, Lowe walks up to the bus and asks the riders if they know who he is: “OK guys, am I John Stamos? Who am I?” as they loudly responded, “Rob Lowe!”

The “Brothers & Sisters” star told the tour guide, “Dude, you gotta get better at your job!” The guide replied that “it’s about having fun, you know? I don’t expect to run into people,” telling Lowe, “Thank you for your cool energy, man.”

Lowe and Stamos, both 61, rose to fame as actors in a series of buzzy roles in the 1980s and ’90s. While Lowe starred in “The Outsiders,” “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Wayne’s World,” Stamos found major success on “General Hospital” and, of course, “Full House.”

Lowe asked his actor son John Owen “Johnny” Lowe, who frequently mocks his famous dad, in the post’s caption: “@johnnylowe am I being Punk’d?” “The people have spoken,” the younger Lowe, 29, said.

Turns out the tour guide may have been in on the joke: Johnny Lowe has long pasted Stamos’ head over his dad’s face in a series of now-deleted Instagram posts. On a 2023 episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” “Full House” alum Stamos proved that he’s (kind of) a part of the family.

“Johnny, the bit about me being your dad — it’s funny and people get a good kick out of it — but it’s getting a bit old,” Stamos jokingly said during a pre-recorded message that appeared. “I’m tired of explaining that, no, I’m not really his dad, I’m a better looking version.

“So, Drew, if it’s okay with you, Johnny and I did a 23andMe test and I’d like to read the results live on your show and stop this madness,” he said, before having an abrupt change of heart.

“You know, I don’t need to prove anything,” he told the father-son duo and Barrymore. “Good luck with the show, guys.” Then, he passed the envelope, directing the recipient to “Burn this. Take it. Burn it!”
