Eurovision 2025 winner is Austria’s JJ for song ‘Wasted Love’

BASEL, Switzerland − Austria won Eurovision Song Contest 2025 on May 17, the country’s first victory since bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst won in 2014.

Operatic singer JJ won ahead of Israel’s Yuval Raphael, a survivor of the Oct. 7 attacks, who sang “New Day Will Rise.” The event is the world’s biggest music competition, watched by more than 160 million people across the world.

The win was Austria’s third in the competition, following Conchita’s success and Udo Juergens’ victory in 1966.

JJ, 24, a countertenor opera singer from Vienna, combined elements of opera, techno and soprano in his song “Wasted Love,” winning the hearts of the professional juries and telephone voters.

“This is absolutely insane. My dreams came true,” said the singer, whose real name is Johannes Pietsch. “It’s out of this world.”

Going into the final, the Filipino-Austrian was second favorite behind Swedish comedy trio KAJ, whose song extolling the joy of saunas had been the hot favorite with bookmakers and ultimately finished fourth.

Switzerland, hosting after Swiss rapper and singer Nemo won last year’s contest in Malmo, Sweden, finished 10th.

JJ said he wanted to give listeners an insight into his deepest thoughts when he wrote the song, and was happy it had resonated with so many fans.

“There’s no wasted love. Love is never wasted. There’s so much love that we can spread around, and we should use love as the strongest force on planet Earth,” he added.

His success was applauded by Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, who said JJ was writing musical history.

“Dear JJ, you have moved Europe with your voice and sung Austria into the spotlight,” Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger said on X.

JJ told reporters he would like next year’s event to be hosted in his hometown of Vienna, which hosted the 2015 final, and added he would like to be a TV host for the event.

Meinl-Reisinger and others joked about the significant cost of holding the event at a time when the government is planning to cut spending by billions of euros a year to rein in the budget deficit.

“Now we’re going to have to take a look at our budget,” she wrote on X. “But isn’t it fantastic?”

Fans traveled from across Europe and beyond to Basel, with 100,000 people attending Eurovision events in the city, including the final.

Hermann Heyn travelled from Chile for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“We came from really, really far away for this,” he told Reuters. “We are not even competing, but we needed to be here.”

Eurovision, which stresses its political neutrality, faced controversy again this year amid the war in Gaza.

Israel’s entrant, Raphael, was at the Nova music festival during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.

The singer was the most popular among the general public to finish behind Austria, the most popular contestant among the juries.

Pro-Palestinian groups urged the European Broadcasting Union to exclude Israel over Gaza, where more than 50,000 people have been killed in the ensuing offensive by Israel, according to local health officials.

Around 200 protesters mounted a demonstration in Basel on Saturday evening, while two protesters attempted to get on to the stage during Raphael’s performance but were halted by security officials. Nobody was injured.

Spanish public broadcaster RTVE displayed a message before the start of the Eurovision show that read: “When human rights are at stake, silence is not an option. Peace and Justice for Palestine.”

Jennifer Lawrence could be poised for her first Oscar nomination in a decade.

The “Hunger Games” star, 34, is already earning awards buzz for her latest film “Die, My Love,” which premiered May 17 at Cannes Film Festival in France. Based on the 2017 novel, the movie stars Lawrence as a young mother “fighting her inner demons,” according to the film’s official festival synopsis. Robert Pattinson co-stars.

Lawrence became a mother in 2022 when she welcomed her first child with husband Cooke Maroney. She and Maroney welcomed their second child together earlier this year.

The actress reflected on being a mom during a Cannes news conference.

“Having children changes everything,” she said. “It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible. Not only do they go into every decision of if I’m working, where I’m working, when I’m working, (but also) they’ve taught me − I didn’t know that I could feel so much.”

“They’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they’ve changed me creatively,” she added before quipping, “I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor.”

Lawrence also reflected on the postpartum period while discussing the role. “There’s not really anything like postpartum,” she said. “It’s extremely isolating. … Extreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolating, no matter where you are. You feel like an alien.”

Early reviews for “Die, My Love” have heaped praise on Lawrence, with Deadline’s Damon Wise writing that it “might yet prove to be a career best” for the actress, IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio saying that she has “never been better,” and Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson declaring that she is “mesmerizing.”

If Lawrence is nominated at the Oscars in 2026, it would be her first Academy Award nod since 2016, when she was up for best actress for “Joy.” She won best actress for “Silver Linings Playbook” in 2013, when she was 22, and has also been nominated for “Winter’s Bone” and “American Hustle.”

After taking a step back from acting, Lawrence has only appeared in a handful of films in recent years, including the 2021 satire “Don’t Look Up” and the 2023 romantic comedy “No Hard Feelings.” Speaking about her acting hiatus on “The Late Show” in 2021, “I took a break and nobody really cared,” she said.

“I got to feel like I could become a part of the world again without fanfare.”

Beyoncé delivers again on night two of her Chicago tour stop

Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” tour is back to regular scheduled programming as the singer brought the heat for a second time in Chicago after facing weather delays her first night.

Beyoncé kicked off the concert around 8:22 p.m. CT on May 17 at Solder Field — similar to her usual start time for the concerts. The Chi-town performance marked Beyoncé’s second time she performed her Cowboy Carter and Rodeo Chitlin’ Circuit Tour on the stage.

“I’m actually really excited and looking forward to it! I feel like her energy is going to be like night one,” said longtime Beyoncé fan and Chicago native Whitney Davis as she waited for the show to start. And Beyoncé delivered another stellar performance, marked by new outfits, new ad-libs and a star-studded audience that included Tyler Perry and “Cowboy Carter” collaborator Shaboozey.

As fans know, the Chicago opener was delayed hours due to sever weather in the area. However neither a wether delay or a temporary evacuation could dampen the crowd’s sky-high energy throughout the night. Beyoncé and her fans weathered the storm as she put on a high-energy performance

“Beyoncé could come out at midnight. Guess what’s going to happen? We’ll still be out here waiting,” said one fan as he waited for the second show to start in the Windy City.

The Grammy-winning singer is set to perform her “Cowboy Carter” tour at Soldier Field for a total of three nights. The remaining show will take place May 18 on the same stage.

Of course, Beyoncé first debuted the highly anticipated show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. She performed a total of five shows there, and the concerts proved to be revolutionary spectacle filled with fashion, different music genres and most notably country music and politics.

The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. Beyoncé has already made history with her scheduled tour dates, including by playing the most dates at SoFi Stadium of any artist.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has yet to perform onstage with her “Cowboy Carter” collaborators during the tour, but one in particular showed up to her show in Chicago. And she made sure to give him a special shout-out.

Beyoncé took the stage at Solider Field for her second concert in the Windy City on May 17. During her performance, she told fans there was a special guest in the building.

“We got Shaboozey in the house tonight,” she said. And the Nigerian-American artist was sure to confirm this, posting the stadium to his Instagram story during the show. Born as Collins Chibueze, Shaboozey is featured on her songs “Spaghettii” and “Sweet Honey Buckiin’” from the eight studio album.

While she was handing out thank-yous toward the end of the show, she once again expressed her appreciation for the “Tipsy” singer, saying, “once again thank you to Shaboozey for being here tonight.” Fans will remember, Beyoncé performed with Shaboozey during the NFL halftime performance on Christmas Day. Some of her other featured guests and collaborators included Post Malone, Tiera Kennedy, Brittney Spencer, Tanner Adell and Reyna Roberts.

‘SNL’ finale mocks Trump’s Middle East trip, cast departure rumors

    play

A landmark season of “Saturday Night Live” is in the books.

The Season 50 finale of “SNL” kicked off with a spoof of President Donald Trump’s recent trip to the Middle East. Joined by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (played by Emil Wakim), Trump (James Austin Johnson) declared that he has been having a fantastic week.

“I didn’t make this trip for myself, I want to make that clear,” he said. “I did this for the American people. And, in many ways, myself, my personal enrichment. I did that, too. I did very well on this trip. Got a lot of cool stuff.”

Johnson’s Trump denied that a luxury jet offered to him by Qatar’s royal family is a bribe “because they haven’t asked for anything in return,” though bin Salman quickly interjected, “Well, not yet.” Johnson’s Trump conceded, “All right, so it’s a pre-bribe.”

He also noted “I don’t think I saw a single woman” on his Middle East trip. “The women are all hiding. It’s like a nation of Melanias.”

But the end of the cold open got seriously meta, with Johnson’s Trump saying he can’t “stay in this sketch much longer” before walking out into the audience to speak to the camera about the “SNL” finale.

“After tonight, you won’t be seeing me here for a while,” he said. “Well, not the fake, fun version of me that makes you smile. The real one will still be omnipresent. You can’t escape me, right? I’m everywhere.”

He concluded, “See you again in the fall, if we still have a country, right? It’s a coin toss.”

Who’s leaving ‘SNL’? Scarlett Johansson monologue jokes about cast departure speculation

Rumors ran wild heading into the finale about which cast members might not return for Season 51.

That still hasn’t been confirmed, but host Scarlett Johansson’s monologue had fun with the rumors and speculation. The “Jurassic World Rebirth” star brought the cast out to join her in a parody of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man,” with the lyrics rewritten to be about the “SNL” finale.

“It lasted forever, we did it together, and we got to spend it with you,” Johansson and the cast sang.

“It’s been a great season, and Sarah is leaving,” Johansson also sang, referring to Sarah Sherman, before the rest of the cast joined in, “We’re all going to miss you next year.”

But Sherman, who is not known to be leaving the show, jokingly acted distraught, asking, “Wait, what? Did you guys hear something? What do you mean leaving?”

Colin Jost brings Scarlett Johansson flowers as ‘SNL’ Season 50 wraps

Some fans had speculated Colin Jost could be leaving the show after the Season 50 finale, or perhaps getting a promotion that would take him off of “Weekend Update.”

Nothing was confirmed during the episode, which ended with a sweet moment between Johansson and Jost, who are married and have a young son together. As Johansson was saying goodnight at the end of the show, Jost walked out and handed her flowers before the two shared a kiss.

Scarlett Johansson gets apology on ‘SNL’ ‘Weekend Update’ joke swap

    play

Colin Jost and Michael Che’s joke swap war continues to escalate.

During the Season 50 finale of “Saturday Night Live,” the “Weekend Update” hosts partook in their biannual segment where they make each other read jokes that the other person has supposedly not seen before.

In December, Jost was forced to read an offensive joke about his wife, Scarlett Johansson, and her private parts. This time, the “Black Widow” actress joined the segment. Che, reading remarks written by Jost, declared he wanted to “apologize to someone I hurt” and brought out Johansson, the episode’s host, to sit next to him. He noted that the “last time we did joke swap, I made Colin do some tasteless jokes” about her.

“The fact is, I was just lashing out because I’m jealous,” Che read. “I’ve never even seen a human vagina. And notice I said human, because I once spent the summer on a farm.”

Che went on to tell Jost, “I owe you everything. When Colin discovered me, I was selling crack outside the Bronx Zoo, and now look at me: selling crack outside the American Girl Doll store. I’ve told thousands of jokes on ‘Update’ and gotten dozens of laughs, but I’ve never said the three most important words of all: I love you.”

During Jost’s portion of the joke swap bit, Che forced his co-host to read a message urging their boss, “SNL” creator and producer Lorne Michaels, to retire and let him run the show. Jost was also forced to read several racist jokes, including one insulting Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show performance.

Johansson was also in the building during the previous joke swap in 2024. After Jost read the crude joke about her that Che had given him, a camera cut to the actress looking shocked and saying, “Oh, my God!” Jost noted she looked “so genuinely worried” during the segment.

Johansson later said on the “Today” show that she was stunned and joked that Che seems to have a “vendetta” against her and Jost, playfully asking, “Michael, why? What did I do to you, Michael?”

  • Can Will Smith, Johnny Depp and Alec Baldwin get a Hollywood comeback?

Can Will Smith, Johnny Depp and Alec Baldwin get a Hollywood comeback?

    play

Hollywood loves a good comeback story.

But what about real-life rebounds? That, it turns out, is an iffier proposition and one that’s about to be tested by three bold-faced names: Alec Baldwin, Johnny Depp and Will Smith.

All three were at different points lead players in the cultural zeitgeist. And all three lost that role, admittedly for vastly different offenses that nonetheless had the same career-dinging effect. Baldwin after Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot with a gun he held on the set of “Rust” in 2021, Depp after a protracted and tawdry 2022 lawsuit with his ex Amber Heard and Smith after slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.

Can this trio win back the hearts and wallets of fans with their new projects? Will Hollywood’s gatekeepers stand ready with open arms?

Not surprisingly, the latter is highly dependent on the former, industry experts say. If you can still turn a buck with your talents, watch your Tinseltown dance card fill up.

“If people have a loyal fan base, they’ll always get a second and even third shot,” says Stacy Jones, CEO of pop culture marketing firm Hollywood Branded. “Look at Robert Downey, Jr. His drug addiction crashed his career more than 20 years ago. And now..?”

Well, now the “Ironman” star’s movies have grossed more than $14 billion and he has a best supporting actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer.” Point taken.

A rebound for Depp, Smith and Baldwin depends on a shifting calculus

So is that sort of about-face a possibility for Baldwin, Depp and Smith? Experts say the calculus for rebounding from scandal involves factors such as what you did, who you did it to, and to what degree people still care.

“If you think about MeToo and cancel culture and people being publicly shamed, while that was strong in recent years, for me the question is, is that sentiment as strong today?” says Todd Boyd, who holds the Katherine and Frank Price Endowed Chair for the Study of Race and Popular Culture at the University of Southern California.

For Michael Schulman, author of “Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat and Tears,” fans are the critical factor.

“Stars come back to the extent that they’re profitable,” he says. He laughs, adding, “I hope you can hear the cynicism.”

One thing that could help a comeback is playing to your scandalous side, Schulman says. His examples include Rob Lowe, who, after an ’80s sex tape scandal, won back fans by playing a sleazy villain in the comedy “Wayne’s World.” Even Baldwin himself, who was in the tabloids for his raucous 2002 divorce from Kim Basinger and then scored a hit by playing a hilariously morals-free executive in the NBC comedy, “30 Rock.”

Schulman, who keeps a keen eye on Hollywood for The New Yorker, did a 2021 piece for the magazine called “Fatty Arbuckle and the Birth of the Celebrity Scandal,” about the silent movie star who was acquitted of rape and murder in the 1920s and never regained his popularity. Today, more than a century later, Schulman says social media connects fans more intensely to celebrities, creating a bond that can help launch a comeback.

“Each of these three stars has a fan base on their side,” he says. “Will’s slap for many was just a man standing up for his wife. With Alec, there’s a widespread sense he shouldn’t even have been charged. And Johnny had wide online support during that trial. Studios will take the temperature, and when needed can reintroduce people with the help of marketing and publicity.”

A look at what’s coming up for Alec Baldwin and Johnny Depp

Let’s open our inquiry into these three comeback cases by looking at what each is working on and whether these roles could prove enough to reignite their personal spotlights.

For Baldwin, whose Western “Rust” debuted in theaters and video on demand May 2 to poor sales, his new output consists of playing himself in the TLC reality series “The Baldwins.”

Although it’s an attempt to showcase the actor as a loveable dad to his brood of seven, the series hasn’t made a mark. In fact, unless Baldwin, whose standout movies include “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “The Hunt for Red October,” returns with a dramatic flourish, his relaunch could be on permanent hold, experts say.

“Ironically, if Alec is guilty of anything it’s coming back as a cringeworthy dad,” says Schulman. “It’s a naked attempt at rebranding. Why not come back as an actor?”

Baldwin is starring in “Hollywood Heist” with Nick Cannon, with Deadline reporting the film is being introduced to buyers in Cannes. But USC’s Boyd argues that Baldwin’s name was never as lofty in the culture as Depp or Smith, and that could hurt his chances of a comeback. “He’s just not as relevant anymore,” he says.

The public seems to agree, says Jones. “Even if ‘The Baldwins’ is atrocious, you should have had a lot of haters tuning in,” she says. “But the public response was indifferent.”

Depp’s offense was not an on-set tragedy but rather an incendiary 2022 court battle with his actress ex wife, who had accused him of being abusive during their relationship. He sued her for damaging his reputation, and won.

Depp is currently filming “Day Drinker,” a thriller with Penelope Cruz. It’s his first movie since appearing in the little seen 2023 French-language film “Jeanne du Barry,” in which he played King Louis XV.

Recently released photos from the new production show a gray-haired and bearded Depp who appears to be acting his age, 61. That pivot could be a smart way to reinvent himself.

“Depp won the court of public opinion (in his case against Heard), but the bigger issue is simply whether he is still the big star he once was,” Boyd says of “Pirates of the Caribbean” icon. “Does he mean the same to audiences now that he did in the past?”

Depp has said before he wasn’t interested in doing a sixth installment in Disney’s lucrative “Pirates” franchise, but “he’s still the face of that ride at Disney, and I bet he would totally do another if offered,” says Jones. The response to “Day Drinker” could sink or revive those piratical conversations.

For some Hollywood experts, the surest comeback bet is … Will Smith

And then there’s Smith. The talented rapper-turned-TV-star-turned-Oscar-winner (a title he earned on the very night he struck Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife’s shaved head, a result of her alopecia) is planning to bombard his fans with fare soon.

Upcoming Smith films in various phases of development are a remake of the 1987 John Candy and Steve Martin comedy “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,” co-starring Kevin Hart; a post-apocalyptic action thriller sequel “I Am Legend 2” with Michael B. Jordan; and a super hero redemption sequel “Hancock 2.”

With these movies, Smith has a chance to recement his bond with audiences, which didn’t happen with two post-Slap movies, “Emancipation,” about a runaway slave, and the popular but critically panned “Bad Boys 4,” as well as a new album, “Based on a True Story.”

But for those reading Hollywood tea leaves, Smith has the greatest chance of mounting a strong industry comeback.

“He was a gigantic star and people really aren’t that angry about that slap and some saw it as noble even,” says Schulman. “Plus, we all saw it happen, it was no secret. There was no mystery.”

For Boyd, “it comes down to who he slapped, which was Chris Rock, a comedian, and comedians often say things that people don’t like.”

Jones agrees on Smith’s good odds, adding what was most shocking about the slap was that it was done “by someone who comes across to us as such a nice guy” through roles such as TV’s “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

For her, what Smith did was more a direct result of the pressure-cooker spotlight and “all-out mania” of Hollywood’s awards season.

Smith is “fundamentally a kingmaker who can likely still make billions in profits for someone,” she says. “Plus, let’s remember, he slapped someone across the face, he didn’t kill someone.”

We’ll give Boyd the final word here. And the final word is: cash.

“In any performance based industry, and this comes up in sports a lot, if someone is very good at what they do and they have a strong following and someone can profit off those talents, those things will be factored into consideration when it comes to giving people another chance,” he says.

“Anyone looking at talent that is trying to come back from something is thinking: ‘Is the risk of taking on this person bigger than the profit we stand to make?’ You figure that out, and go from there.”

Caitlin Clark is praising “the sweetest person” Taylor Swift.

The Indiana Fever star opened up to ESPN about the music industry mega star ahead of her WNBA regular season opener on May 17.

“I think what people don’t always realize about people with a certain spotlight, whether it’s her, whether it’s me, whether it’s another professional athlete or a pop star, we’re real people,” Clark said about the “Fortnight” hitmaker.

Swift is dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

No. 22 fans and “Swifties” were delighted in January when the A-list duo watched a Chiefs playoff game together at Arrowhead Stadium, and Clark detailed what their conversations were really like.

“We’re just having normal conversations as any other person in Arrowhead Stadium that night. She loves the Chiefs just as much as I do. I’m talking football with her,” Clark told ESPN’s Alexa Philippou in the ESPN piece published May 13. “She loved it, and just like her passion, and honestly, probably one of the sweetest people I’ve ever been around.”

Clark said “everybody says that when you meet (Swift) but it’s really true” because “she just treats everybody with the same amount of kindness, and her family was great.” Since Kelce’s Super Bowl loss and Swift’s Eras Tour ended, the pair have chosen to mostly avoid the spotlight.

Clark is considered by some to be the Swift of women’s basketball — well, at least one teammate — for her ability to draw large crowds and her cult-like following of loyal fans. After being traded to the Fever from the Phoenix Mercury in February, Clark’s teammate and friend Sophie Cunningham jokingly said she “will be her Sabrina Carpenter any day to her Taylor Swift” during a podcast appearance.

Before meeting the 14-time Grammy winner in-person, Clark was a Swift fan herself: she attended the Eras tour alongside some Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball teammates in the summer of 2023.
