Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is on trial. Who will testify against him?

    play

Sean “Diddy” Combs is accused of leading a crew of criminals who used sexual abuse, kidnapping, bribery and forced labor to build a mecca of power and money.

So, why is he the only one on trial?

Combs, 55, is facing charges of sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution and racketeering, which consists of directing an illegal enterprise under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Because it takes more than one person to form an organization, RICO cases typically name multiple defendants. While the statute was created to target mob bosses, it is often used to prosecute other types of criminals, such as gang members, drug dealers and fraudsters. In recent years, singer R. Kelly and late financier Jeffrey Epstein have been charged with racketeering for sexually abusing multiple victims for years.

Combs’ trial began with jury selection May 5 in federal court for the Southern District of New York, and testimony is expected to get underway the week of May 12. Clues hidden in court records suggest who his co-conspirators might be and who may testify against him.

Combs’ attorneys have said they believe the government started investigating him after his former girlfriend, Cassandra Ventura Fine, better known by the stage name Cassie, filed a civil suit against him in November 2023. Prosecutors have declined to be interviewed.

In general, as prosecutors build a RICO case, they gather evidence against several people, then offer deals to the ones with less involvement in exchange for testimony against the kingpin. If a criminal case is filed “under seal,” or secretly, the names of everyone who plans to fight the charges tend to be revealed at the same time.

In federal court, the law allows the names of people who plan to cooperate to remain secret until they take the stand.

The indictment against Combs was initially filed under seal. When it was made public in September 2024, he was identified as “Sealed Defendant 1.” This means there must be other defendants whose cases are still sealed.

That’s almost certainly because they have agreed to testify on behalf of the prosecution, according to Laurie Levenson, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and a former federal prosecutor.

“During the investigation, my guess is that there are agreements that were made,” she said. “And so, for the people who are testifying − assuming they’re insiders − I would expect that they have some kind of deals.”

Sometimes those deals involve guilty or no contest pleas to lesser charges. Sometimes, they allow people to avoid charges altogether, especially if someone was both a victim and a co-conspirator. In sex trafficking cases, for example, it’s not uncommon for women who have been forced into sex to later recruit other victims.

Will Kristina Khorram testify against Diddy?

The criminal RICO statute and the civil one are largely the same, according to Daniel Richman, a professor at Columbia Law School and former prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, where Combs’ trial is taking place. Only the penalties and the burden of proof are different − a 20-year prison term, fines and “beyond a reasonable doubt” for criminal; a financial hit and “more likely than not” for civil.

That means the same conduct alleged against Combs’ associates in civil suits could also form the basis of the criminal investigation. So it’s reasonable to expect that some of them will testify for the prosecution during the trial.

Two people have been named as defendants in at least three of the civil cases.

Kristina “KK” Khorram, who worked as Combs’ chief of staff, has been named as a defendant in at least three civil suits and is mentioned in others.

Her attorney, Deborah Colson, would not tell a reporter if Khorram would be testifying at Combs’ trial.

Khorram is listed as a co-defendant in a suit filed by Ashley Parham, who accused Combs, Druski (born Drew Desbordes) and Odell Beckham Jr. of a violent gang rape. All three have denied the claims, and police have called Parham’s claims “unfounded.”

Parham also claimed Khorram threatened her before the assault.

Khorram also is named as a defendant in a civil suit filed by Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones. He alleged that she instructed other employees to acquire drugs and hire sex workers. Jones also claimed that when he complained to Khorram about Combs touching him inappropriately, she said that was how the music mogul showed affection.

A suit filed by Seven Guzel accuses Khorram of arranging the hotel accommodations and transportation that made it possible for Combs to repeatedly assault her. Guzel claims Khorram obtained the drugs Combs gave victims and covered up his abuse.

In a statement, Khorram denied involvement or knowledge of criminal activity.

“These false allegations of my involvement are causing irreparable and incalculable damage to my reputation and the emotional well-being of myself and my family,” Khorram said in the statement. “I have never condoned or aided and abetted the sexual assault of anyone. Nor have I ever drugged anyone.

“The idea that I could be accused of playing a role in – or even being a bystander to – the rape of anyone is beyond upsetting, disturbing, and unthinkable. That is not who I am and my heart goes out to all victims of sexual assault. I am confident that the allegations against me will be proven to be untrue.”

Former Bad Boy president Harve Pierre denies wrongdoing

Harve Pierre, former president of Bad Boy Records, also is named as a defendant in at least three civil suits.

Anna Kane, who originally filed her civil suit under a pseudonym, alleges that she was 17 when she met Pierre in Michigan in 2003. She says Pierre persuaded her to travel with him via private jet to Daddy’s House Recording Studio in New York, where she claims Pierre, Combs and a third man raped her.

In a statement first reported by TMZ, Pierre denied Kane’s allegations.

“This is a tale of fiction. I have never participated in, witnessed, nor heard of anything like this, ever,” he said. “These disgusting allegations are false and a desperate attempt for financial gain.”

Pierre also is named in a suit filed by Dawn Richard of Danity Kane and Diddy −Dirty Money. In the suit, Richard describes being locked with Kalenna Harper in a Bentley with no inner door handles and no heat the day before Dirty Money performed on Saturday Night Live in December 2010. She had no coat and none of her belongings but used Harper’s cell phone to call her father from the car, which was parked outside SIR Studios.

The suit claims Harper was quickly released but Richard was trapped in the vehicle for more than two hours.

“Only after her father arrived and demanded to see her did Mr. Pierre order Mr. Combs’ bodyguard to release Ms. Richard from the vehicle,” the suit says. “Mr. Pierre ushered Ms. Richard’s father between several rooms at SIR Studios, where he waited for approximately two hours before being able to confront Mr. Combs.”

Sara Rivers, former star of the MTV series Making the Band and the group Da Band, also named Pierre as one of more than two dozen co-defendants in her civil RICO suit against Combs. In the suit, Rivers, who used the name Sara Stokes at the time, alleges that she and her bandmates were subjected to an abusive environment while making the show.

“Defendants have unlawfully increased their profits by luring individuals such as plaintiff under false pretenses for defendants’ personal desire, deviances and gain,” the suit says.

Attorney Scott E. Leemon, who is representing Pierre in the suits filed by Kane and Richard, did not return messages from USA TODAY. In a legal filing, he said Richard’s allegations didn’t “support a reasonable inference that Mr. Pierre … ‘enabled’ Combs’ conduct.”

No attorney is listed for Pierre on the docket in Rivers’ case.

Singers Cassie and Dawn Richard likely to testify against Combs

The victims set to testify in the criminal case also are anonymous in documents filed by the prosecution.

But a letter from Combs’ attorneys to the judge dated April 28 provides enough information to identify them. In the letter, the lawyers ask U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian to prohibit “anticipated witnesses’ lawyers” from making statements to the media.

One of the lawyers called out in the letter is Lisa Bloom, who represents two of Diddy’s accusers: Richard and a male entertainer from Las Vegas who filed suit anonymously. The letter includes links to two videos in which Bloom discusses Richard’s suit against Combs. That means the potential government witness the defense lawyers are referring to is Richard.

The same document indicates that Ventura Fine is the woman prosecutors are calling “Victim 1.” It links to two news stories in which her civil attorney, Douglas Wigdor, criticizes defense attorneys for claiming that a video of Combs abusing her in a hotel hallway in 2016, aired by CNN in May 2024, was doctored.

At a hearing May 1, the judge asked Combs’ lawyers to provide the legal basis for its request. When they didn’t, the matter was dropped – although the judge noted that either party could ask for a limited gag order preventing certain statements in the future if “any additional concerns arise.”

The civil attorneys or their representatives are likely to be present in court to observe the trial, since what happens there could have a significant impact the outcome of their clients’ lawsuits. That’s because RICO is one of the few laws under which decisions about testimony and evidence made on the criminal side also rule the day on the civil side.

So if the criminal prosecutors were able to prove Combs raped Kane, for example, she wouldn’t have to prove it again as part of her civil suit. As a result, she would be more likely to be awarded financial compensation.

“It depends on what the proof is, but she’ll certainly have an easier path to recovery,” according to Richman, the Columbia law professor.

The same goes for other civil defendants who may have reached previously secret plea deals that will be revealed during Combs’ trial.

A guilty verdict could also make it easier for the civil plaintiffs to actually receive compensation from Combs, since federal authorities would then be able to seize many of his assets.

“Pretty much anything that’s been connected with the illegal activity, they forfeit that to the government,” said Levenson, the Loyola Law School professor. “They’re often used for restitution for the victims, … because you don’t want people to profit from ill-gotten gains.”

    • JET (42A: Pink Fuzion Frenzy character) Fuzion Frenzy is a four-player video game that features a number of minigames. JET is a playable character in Fuzion Frenzy and in the sequel game Fuzion Frenzy 2. JET has pink hair, and wears a pink two-piece suit and a pink safety helmet.

    Random Thoughts & Interesting Things

    • TAPAS (1A: Croquetas and such) TAPAS are a variety of appetizers or snacks that are popular in Spanish cuisine. Croquetas are a type of fried dumpling made of a thick batter surrounding a filling.
    • LANE (16A: “Penny ___”) “Penny LANE” is, of course, a classic Beatles song, released in 1967. “In Penny LANE there is a barber showing photographs / Of every head he’s had the pleasure to have known / And all the people that come and go / Stop and say hello…”
    • USED (19A: “She ___ To Be Mine”) “She USED to Be Mine” is a song Sara Bareilles wrote for the musical Waitress (which was adapted from the 2007 movie of the same name). Last month we saw this song title in a clue for the word SHE.
    • FALLEN (23A: “The shroud of the Dark Side has ___. Begun the Clone War has.”) As one might guess from the syntax, “The shroud of the Dark Side has FALLEN. Begun the Clone War has,” is spoken by Jedi Grandmaster Yoda of the Star Wars franchise. This line is from the end of the 2002 movie Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
    • ODOR (43A: That stinks!) The exclamation point in this clue is a signal to solvers to interpret this clue literally. An ODOR literally stinks.
    • TACO BAR (50A: Shell station?) A question mark at the end of a clue (that isn’t a conversational quote) indicates there’s a bit of trickiness and wordplay going on. The wordplay in this case is that “shell station” here doesn’t refer to a Shell-branded gas station. Instead, it refers to a “station where you can get a (food with a) shell,” or a TACO BAR. Fun!
    • ARG (53A: “Evita” country (Abbr.)) The 1978 musical, EVITA, is based on a 1976 concept album of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. EVITA tells the story of the life of Eva Perón, whose nickname was EVITA. Eva Perón was the first lady of Argentina (ARG.) from 1946-1952.
    • ADIEU (61A: “Au revoir, mon amie”) and CIAO (62A: “Arrivederci, amico mio”) This is a fun pair of consecutive clues! The clues both say “Goodbye, my friend,” first in French (“Au revoir, mon amie”) and then in Italian (“Arrivederci, amico mio”). The answers are casual French and Italian words for “goodbye.” (Note that the Italian word “CIAO” can be used to mean both “hello” and “goodbye.”)
    • ELMO (68A: “Sesame Street” character who asked people online how they were doing) In January 2024, ELMO, the lovable red Muppet from Sesame Street, posted online, “ELMO is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” The responses were overwhelming, as people answered ELMO’s question honestly. When it became obvious that many people were struggling, the Sesame Street Workshop posted links to mental health resources. ELMO replied to many of the responses, doing his best to lift everyone up. In a follow-up post, ELMO said, “Wow! ELMO is glad he asked! ELMO learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. ELMO will check in again soon, friends! ELMO loves you. ❤ #EmotionalWellBeing.”
    • PET (3D: Furry creature that lives with you) Here’s a photo of my PET, my cat Willow, helping me write this article.

    • ART CLASSES (4D: Places to draw the curtains?) Here’s another question mark clue. Remember that the question mark is an indication that there is wordplay happening. In this case, “draw the curtains” does not refer to “closing the drapes,” but to actually drawing curtains, say with a pencil, as you might in ART CLASSES. It’s fun to see USA Today including some question mark clues every once in a while now.
    • SERB (7D: Belgrade resident) Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia.
    • NED (13A: Playable character in the Nancy Drew PC game Alibi in Ashes) The game Alibi in Ashes is one of a series of Nancy Drew computer games published by HeR Interactive. The games are based on the characters in the Nancy Drew mystery book series. The playable characters in Alibi in Ashes are Nancy, NED (Nancy’s boyfriend), Bess (one of Nancy’s best friends), and George (Nancy’s other best friend).
    • GRETA (22D: Director Gerwig) GRETA Gerwig’s directorial credits include Lady Bird (2017), Little Women (2019), and Barbie (2023).
    • HAD (46D: “No one’s ever ___ me, not like you”) “No one’s ever HAD me, not like you” is a lyric from Taylor Swift’s 2024 song, “So High School.” Now it’s an official Amie and Amanda collab; it has a Taylor Swift reference.
    • DAL (49D: ___ tadka (lentil-based dish)) DAL tadka is a dish of cooked lentils, which is finished with a tempering of ghee and spices. DAL are dried, split legumes (lentils, peas, and beans), so the word “lentil” in the clue is a nice hint.
    • EMO (64D: Something Corporate genre) Something Corporate is a band whose music is described as alt rock, pop-punk, and EMO. This clue reminds me of Amie and Amanda’s November 11, 2024 puzzle, which is titled “Something Corporate.”

    • DIRTY LAUNDRY (57A: Private affairs that can be “aired”)

GTL: The theme answers end in the words GYM, TAN, and LAUNDRY, which is the meaning of the acronym GTL.

The acronym GTL is new to me. I had to look it up to discover that it stands for GYM TAN LAUNDRY, which then made the puzzle’s theme apparent. The acronym GTL was made popular by the reality TV show Jersey Shore. Thank you, Amie and Amanda, for this enjoyable puzzle.

  • John Legend slams Kanye West

    play

John Legend is slamming his former friend and ex-mentor Ye for his “anti-Blackness” and “antisemitism.”

In an interview published in British outlet The Times of London on May 10, the “Ordinary People” singer slammed the Chicago rapper while recounting the roots of their personal and professional relationship.

“Kanye was very passionate, very gifted, and he had big dreams not only for himself but also for all the people around him,” Legend said of the artist, whose birth name is Kanye West. “He had so much optimism, so much creativity. It does feel sad, sometimes shocking, to see where he is now.”

“I didn’t see a hint of what we’re seeing now, his obsessions with antisemitism, anti-blackness, and it is sad to see his devolution,” Legend continued during the talk with the Times. “I don’t think we’re qualified to psychoanalyze him, but after his mother passed in 2007, there was definitely a difference.

Legend said that “his descent started” after Ye’s beloved mother and Chicago State University professor Donda West died in 2007 and “seems to have accelerated recently.”

USA TODAY reached out to representatives for Ye for a response, but has not received a comment.

Ye’s controversial behavior has raised eyebrows in recent years. In February, he took to X in a tirade against Jews in a series of posts (before temporarily deleting his account) and, in an ad, he directed Super Bowl viewers to his website (which is now down) where the only item he was selling was a $20 T-shirt featuring a swastika.

During the Times of London interview, Legend looked back on the release of Ye’s debut album “The College Dropout” in 2004 and his own first album “Get Lifted” later that year, which came out after he signed to Ye’s label G.O.O.D. Music.

“Kanye blew up after producing Jay-Z’s album ‘The Blueprint’ in 2001,” Legend told the outlet. “Then he experienced a buzz as a solo artist and the whole time I was travelling with him, doing shows with him, getting exposure not only as his singer and keyboard player but also as an artist myself.”

He added, “I had been turned down by labels everywhere. Then, ‘The College Dropout’ sold 400,000 copies in its first week, everyone wanted to know what was happening in our camp, and all those people who turned me down suddenly decided that my music sounded a lot better than it did the first time round.”

Legend, Ye fell out over latter’s support of Donald Trump

In 2020, West himself “ran for president” and appeared on the ballot in 12 states.

Then, Legend famously feuded with Ye in 2021 and 2022 after Ye came out in support of President Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again agenda.

After the fact, Ye claimed Legend and well-known Detroit rapper Big Sean turned on him after his support for Trump.

“Both John Legend and Big Sean, when I ran for office, got used quick by the Democrats to come at they boy that actually changed they life. … I don’t rock with neither of them, and I need my apologies,” the rapper said during an appearance on Revolt’s “Drink Champs” podcast in 2021.

“I’m not really saying anything shocking, you know John Legend gone always show up and do whatever them folks tell him to do,” Ye added in the “Drink Champs” interview. “That’s not a shocking thing, man.”

Michelle Obama is letting loose in the wake of President Donald Trump’s second term.

In a video posted to her official Instagram account, the “Becoming” author practiced her dance moves to 803Fresh’s viral song, “Boots on the Ground (Where Them Fans At)” before joining Beyoncé’s mom Tina Knowles for a book talk.

“I had so much fun talking with @MsTinaKnowles last week about her memoir, Matriarch,” she wrote in her post May 9. “This Mother’s Day weekend, I hope you’ll check out this very special episode of @IMOpodcasts now on YouTube at the link in my bio or wherever you get your podcasts.”

On April 30, the former first lady helped the fashion designer kick off nine-city book tour, “Matriarch: An Evening with Tina Knowles, Family and Friends” at the MGM National Harbor Hotel and Casino in the Washington D.C. area.

The evening ended with the duo dancing to “Boots on the Ground.”

The Knowles mother’s memoir “Matriarch” follows her rise from girl growing up in Galveston, Texas to mom of Beyoncé, Solange Knowles and “bonus daughter” Kelly Rowland who is recognized around the world.

Michelle Obama becoming media mogul in post-White House life

In recent months, as Trump landed in the White House once again, the former first lady has reintroduced herself with a relaxed persona as the co-host of buzzy new podcast “IMO” alongside brother Craig Robinson.

In April, during a conversation with Robinson and Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson, the “Becoming” on Netflix star again addressed viral rumors she was divorcing former President Barack Obama by skipping the inaugural ceremony.

“My decision to skip the inauguration — or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me — were met with such ridicule and criticism,” Obama explained during the episode. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason. They had to assume that my marriage was falling apart.”

Then, during a May 1 episode of “The Diary of a CEO” podcast with host Steven Bartlett, she confessed that “if I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it” adding that Robinson “would know it,” too. The “Becoming” author also said that “I would be problem solving in public,” adding, “I’m not a martyr.”

Robinson chimed in and said that if the pair were having marriage problems, “I’d be doing a podcast with (Barack Obama).”

Look at that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan!

Real royalty watched music royalty during date night at Beyoncé’s final Los Angeles concert for her Cowboy Carter world tour on May 9.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex embraced for a photo shared on the music superstar’s official website as the “With Love” star posed with her hand near her “Spare” author husband’s chest.

In the snap, Harry donned an olive green cowboy hat paired with a gray shacket, dark jeans and a black T-shirt while Meghan turned heads in an off-the-shoulder denim dress from one of her favorite brands Carolina Herrera.

In 2023, the Sussexes were spotted attending the “Break My Soul” singer’s Renaissance tour at SoFi Stadium in L.A. after Beyoncé became a member of Meghan and Harry’s A-list group of friends when they left the U.K. behind in January 2020.

A year before stepping back from their official roles as working royals, the “Harry & Meghan” co-stars met the 35-time Grammy winner at the London premiere of “The Lion King” in 2019.

In their 2022 four-episode Netflix docuseries, Meghan revealed that Beyoncé texted her “just checking in” and quipped “I still can’t believe she knows who I am.”

“Just casual,” Harry joked during the interaction.

    Harry suggests royal ‘reconciliation’

The couple’s night out comes after Harry shared that he “would love a reconciliation” with the royal family.

In an emotional and explosive interview shared May 2 following a lost legal challenge in the U.K., he told BBC News that his dad King Charles III “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff” in reference to his lost court battle to overturn the British government’s changes to his security detail.

He also told the British outlet that “I don’t know how much longer my father has.” Charles, 76, who recently battled cancer, said recently that the disease helped show him “the very best of humanity.”

“I can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point,” Harry said.

As for Meghan, she reemerged this year from a more private post-royal life with a pair of pre-Harry-inspired pursuits: a Netflix show, “With Love,” and a companion lifestyle brand, As Ever. Before meeting Harry, she was the curator of a successful lifestyle blog, The Tig.

She also hosts a popular new podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder.”

The “Old Town Road” collaborator reunited with his previously estranged daughter Miley Cyrus after a reported rift to celebrate his son Braison Cyrus’ 31st birthday in the snap posted May 9.

The country singer took to Instagram to share a selfie with the “End of the World” hitmaker, who was pictured with her arms wrapped around Liily drummer boyfriend Maxx Morando.

“Happy Birthday Braison!!!!!” the Cyrus family patriarch captioned the photo alongside celebratory emojis.

Two days earlier, he hinted at a potential reunion by sharing a video of his middle daughter playing the piano, writing “Can’t wait to see this young lady. Crazy how time flies.”

In March, the “Hannah Montana” co-stars raised eyebrows when the country chart-topper took to Instagram to praise the “Flowers” singer after she announced her ninth album “Something Beautiful.”

“You are witnessing in real time what it feels like for a Dad who with in less than one weeks time has had his (butt) kicked and his mind blown by not one …but two of his own daughters @mileycyrus @noahcyrus,” Cyrus wrote alongside a side-by-side photo of the “We Can’t Stop” singer and her little sister Noah Cyrus.

Cyrus’ social media endorsement came after his son Trace Cyrus previously expressed concern for his dad’s well-being in a Jan. 22 Instagram post, writing, “Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now.”

Billy Ray Cyrus appears to be dating actress Elizabeth Hurley

In recent months, the controversial country singer has seemingly rebounded from a difficult year after a contentious divorce from ex-wife Firerose.

He is currently romantically linked to actress Elizabeth Hurley, who seemingly debuted the pair’s relationship in an April 20 joint post on Instagram for Easter. “Little House on the Prairie” alum Melissa Gilbert commented “Wait….what?” capturing many fans’ reaction to the new couple.

A week later, on April 27, Cyrus was pictured with his arms wrapped around Hurley standing by a tree with the caption, “Tennessee weekend” and a red heart emoji.

  • Biggest differences from Judy Blume novel

Biggest differences from Judy Blume novel

    play

Spoiler alert! We’re discussing major plot details from the new series adaptation of “Forever” (all episodes on Netflix now).

“Forever…” was controversial when Judy Blume published it in 1975. The young adult novel follows a high school girl navigating her first love and first time. “Forever” talks candidly about sex, consent, mental health and depression. When it came out 50 years ago, the book was deemed too sexually explicit and faced criticism and bans.

Now, as a series streaming on Netflix, the latest “Forever” adaptation meets a culture that’s more prepared to openly talk about sex in modern media.

Mara Brock Akil’s adaptation reimagines Blume’s classic with a contemporary Black cast, dealing with identity, expectations, race and class as much as it does with losing one’s virginity.

‘Forever’ adapts Judy Blume novel with all-Black cast

Brock Akil’s “Forever” is loosely adapted from the Blume book, so many of its key plot points have been changed or given a modern refresh. The characters’ names are no longer Katherine and Michael but Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.). The story takes place in Los Angeles, not in New Jersey. Both characters are Black and their place in predominantly white schools – especially Justin – is a major theme.

“Other shows have tried to showcase this nuanced experience of growing up Black in a white environment, but none have succeeded as pitch-perfectly as Forever does,” Nadira Goffe, a culture writer from Slate who is Black, wrote in a review.

With eight episodes, “Forever” has time to sink into much more than Blume’s book could at less than 230 pages. The series is also told from both Justin and Keisha’s perspectives (the book is just Katherine), and we get a more full view of their family life, friends and communities. Class plays a bigger role in this adaptation than it did in the book – Justin’s family is well-off and summers on Martha’s Vineyard while Keisha’s single mom struggles to make ends meet.

Some aspects are the same, including awkward sexual experiences, the thrill of first love and a brief mention of the couple’s friends seeing each other. In the book, Katherine and Michael’s friends Erica and Artie try their hand at dating but Artie’s struggles with his sexuality and eventual suicide attempt prevent it from going further.

The series skips that, but still has candid conversations about mental health. Keisha tells Justin about her depression before she switched schools. Later, she and her mom have a breakthrough after therapy.

‘Forever’ gets a modern refresh with technology, social media pitfalls

Gone are the letter-writing chapters from Blume’s 1975 novel, replaced with the agony of waiting for a text reply and the will-they-won’t-they blocking and unblocking of modern young love. Justin even gets his friends to post #UnblockJustin to campaign for Keisha’s attention after they have a falling out. When they rekindle it’s in the form of Daft Punk and Tyler, The Creator lyrics.

And in a world all too familiar with revenge porn and sextortion, the new adaptation shows Keisha in crisis after her ex-boyfriend shares a sex tape they made. Keisha is humiliated and forced to leave her current school, transferring to another, more expensive one. Her reputation among former peers, Justin’s missteps to understand what she’s going through and her reappearing ex add major strife to the relationship.

    Ralph is still, well, Ralph

If you’ve read the Blume book, you might remember that Michael affectionately referred to his genitals as “Ralph.” It’s only mentioned once in the adaptation (unlike the book, where the moniker appears frequently), but Brock Akil told The New York Times she kept Ralph to thank Blume “for her blessing to translate the book.”

Jokes aside, the new Netflix adaptation is faithful to Blume’s book in that it portrays the complications of coming into sexuality without condemning it as bad, unnatural or dangerous. Keisha and Justin work through hovering parents and technical difficulties before they get to their first time. It’s awkward at times, but it’s human.

Blume originally wrote the book for her daughter, she writes on her website, to present a story where two teenagers fall in love and have sex without anyone’s life being ruined. In the book, Katherine goes to Planned Parenthood to get birth control. In the series, Justin has an important conversation (and cucumber demonstration) with his father about contraception.

‘Forever’ ending stays broadly faithful to Blume book

Blume’s novel ends, despite their planning and wishing, with Katherine and Michael breaking up. After a summer apart (in the book, Katherine kisses another guy at camp in the wake of her grief after losing her grandfather), the two decide maybe they weren’t each others’ forevers after all.

The same happens in Brock Akil’s adaptation. While his mom expects him to go to a prestigious college to play basketball and study a profitable major, Keisha helps Justin realize that what he really wants to do is pursue music. The pair part on amicable, albeit heartbreaking, terms. By the last scene, they understand that there are bigger things in store for each of them as Keisha goes to Howard University and Justin saves up on his gap year.

Blue Ivy approves the name ‘manager Blue’ during Beyoncé’s tour

Blue Ivy Carter may be young but she’s already an icon — and she knows it, giving the name “manager Blue” a big stamp of approval.

The 13-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z has had the internet buzzing as she’s shown off her stellar moves and has taken a lead role on her mom’s Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin’ Circuit Tour. Even before the tour kicked off in Los Angeles on April 28, fans have jokingly called her Beyoncé’s manager.

Now though, it’s clear Blue knows who’s in charge. During Beyoncé’s May 4 show in Los Angeles, fan @garedennn captured the moment Blue Ivy saw her sign, which read, “We Love U Manager Blue.”

When the young superstar caught wind of it onstage, she made sure to point it out and give it a big thumbs up.

Of course, Blue Ivy has been blowing fans away with her fierce performances and stellar moves throughout the show. Videos of her performances have made rounds on social media since the start of the tour. However, the her rock star performance is not all that surprising.

This is the second tour where Blue has appeared as a backup dancer, though this time she seems to be leading. Blue made her debut on the 2023 Renaissance World Tour in Paris. She also danced with her mom during the Beyoncé Bowl NFL halftime show on Christmas Day 2024.

The nine-city “Cowboy Carter” tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter hit the stage for her final show in Los Angeles on her “Cowboy Carter” tour, and in true Bey fashion, she went went out with a bang.

The Grammy-winning singer performed her fifth and final show on her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin Circuit Tour at SoFi Stadium on May 9. The show kicked off around 8:03p.m. PT — the earliest time yet — as Beyoncé entered to a packed crowd.

Before the night began, Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment company told fans to arrive early. In a story shared to Instagram, the company wrote, “Please get to SoFi Stadium early tonight. The buckin’ begins on stage at 7:45 p.m.”

The May 9th show proved to be another groundbreaking spectacle, blending fashion, different music genres and most notably country music and politics. There are few standout moments that have the Beyhive buzzing about Beyoncé’s final Los Angeles performance.

Rumi Carter sings along with Beyoncé to ‘Dangerously in Love’

Beyoncé’s 7-year-old daughter, Rumi Carter, has been a highlight of the tour. She first stole the hearts of fans with her vibrant stage presence, excitedly waving at the crowd as Beyoncé performed “Protector.” Since then, fans have eagerly waited to see her take the stage each night.

At the final show, she delivered another adorable moment, singing the lyrics alongside her mom as she sang her 2003 song “Dangerously in Love.”

Beyoncé replaces the infamous stairs, robot arm misses Bey’s cup

Beyoncé’s concerts have been filled with high-tech production, and eagle-eyed fans have been watching every detail. One unexpected fan obsession has been the stairs Beyoncé descends before performing her song “I’m That Girl.” Early in the tour, fans speculated that the stairs were brought out late, and each night, the Beyhive jokingly kept tabs on their arrival.

Friday night, Beyoncé switched things up as she replaced the stairs with a sleek stage lift, and fans immediately took note of the upgrade.

Another high-tech moment came courtesy of a robotic arm on stage. Fans noticed the arm may have missed Beyoncé’s cup while pouring her a glass of SirDavis whiskey. Of course, the Beyhive caught the diva’s reaction. And the moment instantly sparked playful reactions and admiration across the internet.

Beyoncé’s ‘Tyrant’ and ‘Haunted’ mashup makes the set list again

Beyoncé’s tour set list has been a major talking point. The last four shows have mostly maintained the same set list, including her beloved throwback hits. On night four, fans were thrilled to hear one particular mash-up, where Beyoncé mixed her 2024 song “Tyrant” with her 2013 tune “Haunted.” And many were eager to see the fan-favorite made the cut once again during the last show.

Blue Ivy chooses rodeo queen ahead of final show

A fun tradition that’s taken shape ahead of Beyoncé’s shows is her publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, selecting the best-dressed fan and crowning them “rodeo queen” for their standout western-inspired outfit. Before the final show kicked off, Schure surprised the crowd by announcing that this time, the winner was chosen by none other than Blue Ivy Carter herself.

Of course, Beyoncé debuted her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin Circuit Tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. A total of five shows took place on the SoFi Stadium stage on April 28, May 1, May 4, May 7 and May 9.

As fans know, Beyoncé first released the 27-track project in March 2024. It has since made history and broken multiple records. As Beyoncé’s first country album, she deliberately featured country legends and emerging Black country artists alike. She became the first Black woman to win best country album at the 2025 Grammys and also took home album of the year.

The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. She has already made history with her tour dates, including by playing the most dates at SoFi Stadium of any artist.

Beyoncé’s next tour stop will take place in Chicago at Soldier Field on May 15.
